First OC Build Log

Thread Starter
First let me say that I have filled my system specs in on my user cp and they are not showing up. I have submitted this as a bug already and hope to have it resolved soon. Until then, here are my system specs:

PSU - Antec Neo HE 550w
Motherboard - DFI BLOOD IRON P35-T2RL
CPU - E2180 Allendale
RAM - Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 6400
Vid Card - X1900 XT
HDD - 2x WD Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB SATA (From previous box)
Sound Card - SB Audigy2 ZS
CPU Cooling - Thermalright 120 Ultra
GPU Cooling - Zalman VF900
Case - Aspire X-Pider ATX Full Tower (4 80mm fans configured in 2 intake 2 exhaust)

On to the build. I got all my pieces in and began putting them together (nothing new here, have built before). Booted right up and had no issues installing windows to one of the sata hdd's (all I plugged in at first since not doing a raid config). Began the arduous task of downloading all of the updates since the Blood Iron disk with chipset drivers needed SP2 in order to install the drivers. Finished that, installed the drivers and AV program. All was going great and I was like a kid in a candy shop.

Here is where the problems started. I downloaded the latest bios to make sure I was up to date before beginning anything else. Flashed the BIOS successfully and began a reboot. Upon reboot nothing happened, would not POST so I decided to clear the CMOS. That worked and I was able to get to the BIOS no problem. I F10'd out after making no changes and at the point where the OS/boot disk takes over it just sits on a black screen. I reboot into BIOS and make sure that the HDD is being recognized, no problems there. After a few more attempts I decide to boot to the XP install disk to see if it will recognize anything. At this point it boots to the disk and on the first step where it interrogates your system to see what hardware it has to work with on the install it black screens. I attempted this several times before going to bed and calling it a night.

Get a floppy drive and reinstall the OLD bios. I think it may have gotten corrupted during the update. PLEASE tell me you have a OLD floppy lying around? or ask a frend.

Or if you have a flash drive, you can format it to boot into DOS mode like a floppy would do, and flash the bios the same way you would with a floppy but with teh flash drive.
Meh.

Someone else suggested that it may still be expecting the floppy drive itself to be attached (I unhooked it after the bios flash) and I need to disable it in the bios.

Nevaziah, thanks for the help. I do still have a floppy disk around I had to dig an old dusty one out of a drawer last night. I went through about 3 of them before finding one that was not damaged. I will try your suggestion when I get home from work in a few hours.

Itslogz - Thanks, googling how to do that now, would be easier imo since my laptop is the only other secondary computer I have right now and it does not have a floppy drive.

It appears that it may have been the hdd that was failing. Strange because it was working fine for a while, but must have taken a dump somewhere along the way. Shouldn't have used those old WD's, but because I am a glutton for punishment, I am currently installing Windows on the other of my two.

I did reflash the bios though and all went smooth there.

Alright everything is going well now. Got all my settings to the rated factory settings for ram and cpu. I made the mistake of ordering a 120mm fan that has full posts so I couldn't attach it to my tr 120 ultra and had to order a new one that will be here tomorrow. Until then I can't push things too much, but me case has decent ventilation and with the 120 installed I have been able to oc a little.

I have pushed up to 2.3ghz and idle temps are 38/39 and with orthos running I end up hitting about 57/58 after 2 minutes. I feel hopeful that once my fan gets in tomorrow and the as5 finishes curing I can be around the 54/55 range at a max. I actually hope I get more room than that because one of my 4 intake fans on the case are dead and that fan arrives tomorrow as well. So, that will give me even more case ventilation.

With the stock set up I ran 3dmark06 and hit a 5500 with the current set up. That was a bit lower than I expected, but since I have never benchmarked before I shouldn't have had much of an expectation to begin with. I hope that I can pull that up as I gain more knowledge and get things tweaked.

The 120mm fan I ordered that will not fit on my tr120 is a silverstone fm121, it would have cost me more than was worth it to rma to newegg, so if someone is looking for a brand new one and wants to make a decent offer I will be happy to sell it. If not I'll hold on and maybe mod my side panel to take a 120 instead of the current 80 that is in there.

Thanks to all who have helped thus far, plenty of you have helped and don't know it since I browsed the forums for information every possible moment over the last few weeks.

Something very similar happened to me when I updated my P5K's bios today. The computer wouldn't post, no picture at all after restarting.

I was just about to RMA when I tried one last thing, I simply turned off the PSU, removed the power cable and let it that way for a few minutes, I plugged it back in and; miracle! IT WORKS!

Try it out, you could be surprised!

Well I got her running much better now. Sitting at 3.0GHz and running stable. I'll have to push a bit harder tomorrow when I get my fans in.
