E8500 vs Q6600 vs Q6700

Thread Starter
Ok so my friend came into a good amount of money and he is planning on building a "Super Gaming Machine" ... he is trying to think of the best route.

Just so you guys know he is putting in 8800gtx SLI... even though I think it's stupid, but it's not gonna change anything...

Do you think he's better off with the E8500 when it comes out? I think the Q6700 isn't worth the extra money, so do you think the Q6600 (w/ tuniq tower) would work better when Oc'd.

Q6600 for sure.

Why the GTX SLI, is he getting a good deal on the GTX's?

Well heck, he might as well go Ultra SLI.

Seriously, he needs to SLI the GT's and used the saved money for an upgrade of something else.

Q6600 is the best for money now.
You'll get a lot of arguments on the E8xxx vs. Q6600, both which have merit. My vote is go for the quad. There are some programs that utilize quads, and more are being made.

But the Q6700 is an utter waste of money IMO - it is the exact same chip as the Q6600, except for the maximum multiplier. You really won't need the 10x multiplier of the Q6700. People seem to like the 8x multi for moderate OC's and 9x multi for higher OC's. Think of it this way: with a 10x multi and a reasonable 450FSB speed, you'd already be at 4.5GHz (well beyond the typical limit of these chips). Now with the Q6600, I'm sitting nicely at a 400MHz FSB and 3.6GHz.

I say E8400 or Q6600 because both are really good overclockers, and you can easily achieve the E8500 and Q6700 speeds anyways.

GTX's in SLI will perform about 15% better than my one card and cost over twice as much. Not a good move.

Tell your friend to not go gtx, seriously, especially if he pays the electric bill. Just say no, just show him this thread. DONT DO IT.

Go Q6600, the final thing I told myself before I got my Q6600 was, when programs allow it, 2 Q6600 cores will beat 1 E8xxx core regardless of how much OC there is, and every month there are programs/games that allow more and more cores to be used and it will only increase now that companies know that everyone will be taking the multi-core route.
