Help my silence from <10 feet away!

Thread Starter
I have my computer in my room, and I want to be able to leave it on at night and not hear it, so I can sleep.

Right now it is pretty noisy, with stock cooler and a very loud power supply.

My case can fit 4(four) 120mm fans, and I want to cut a new slot in the top for a slow-moving fan or just a vent.

Money is a big factor, cheaper is better.

Mostly passive is good.

Right now, I think I need a CPU cooler, two replacement fans for my Ultra 600w PSU (80mm fans), one replacement 120mm fan (at least) and possibly a NB cooler (about 5000rpms is kinda annoying).

Can anybody help me out?

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro should work for the CPU. I had the Freezer 7 Pro (only difference is the mount), and that thing was silent even when running full-tilt.

For the power supply, I'd try to get the Enermax UC-8EB fans. They're cheap, use a magnetic-barometric bearing for practically zero bearing noise, and aren't terrible in terms of the amount of air they move (especially given their noise profile). To be honest though, if you've got the money I'd recommend a new power supply altogether though. A decent unit with a single 120mm fan would likely be preferable. That can be done later of course, when you get some money together. And who knows, the Enermax fans might do the trick.

120mm fans, there's a lot of options. I personally own the Scythe S-Flex SFF21F and the Noctua NF-P12, and they're dead quiet. My father uses the Enermax UC-12EB, and those are dead silent and cheap, but aren't hugely impressive in terms of air moved. Going back to Arctic Cooling, I believe they have a 120mm version of their FDB line, I'd look into that. I've heard good things about the 1500RPM Sharkoon fans as well, and Yate Loons are naturally a popular choice.

Northbridge cooler, I'd look into a silent model if your northbridge isn't running too hot with active cooling. Try removing the fan and seeing how things go - if temperatures skyrocket, I'd probably get an active cooler, but if they get warm but not unbearably so, just pick up a better passive cooler. Enzotech had some nice-looking all-copper heatsinks, or if you want to go whole-hog, you could get the Thermaltake HR-05.

Would it be easy to cut a 120mm fan slot in the bottom of my PSU? Then I could unplug the dual 80mms.

The only problem with the PSU is the sound of the air going through, the fans themselves are near silent. Would I be able to undervolt the fans easily right out of the PSU?

Just incase you are looking for some stats and reviews on case fans I found this great site that reviews some popular fans.

I'm not sure that you wanna do that just yet. Is it your PSU that is making all the noise? You might want to choose some silent case fans, get it all hooked up, and see if the PSU is still uncontrollably loud. Then I would experment with the PSU.

Good Luck!

I would recommend a couple of these for your case:

http://www.petrastechshop.com/12yalod1cafa1.html

I have the higher speed version, slowed down to ~1600RPM and they're very quiet, while still moving lots of air.

ok so all your fans are screaming and u want to sleep in the same room yes?

well,

as suggested get your self an freezer pro 7 (or what ever the amd version is called)... in the bios set it to low (if u can)... with the case open in front of u look at the way the air is going to flow thru your case... if its coming in from the front and up to the top (where your putting a blow hole i believe) then face the heatsink in the correct way as to aid the flow of air... at this point look at your cable managment, nip down the DIY store and get your self smoe cable ties and some cable tie mounts ( really really cheap!!!).. its the way the air flows in your case that you want to be looking at as 2 or 3 good slow turing cheap 120/92/80mm fans will do wonders for your air flow...

so...
shopping list:cable ties
cable tie mounts
artic cooler heat sink
3 x 120mm 1500(ish)rpm fans
and time (which is free might i ad)

tidy up the inside of your case so the air can move freely.. and u should be a happy bunny...

yes i do repeat myself alot and yes i am sorry... but the best and easist mods are well planned ones...

I've been itching to get some zip ties
What are cable tie mounts? never heard of 'em before
AC heatsink or something else has been on my shopping list, unless I go WC (unlikely)
I have also found some 1600rpm scythes and I'm looking for a cheap fan controller before I buy them.

I am going to end up with lots of fans, and I'm just going to tune down the front case fan because I'm not really sure how to get the front panel off of my case (in sig rig).

Kind of surprised to see a response on this, but its welcomed

My case is uber neat and tidy, and I just spent 30-60 minutes rerouting lots of cables behind my motherboard while I had it out to look for serial number.

Problem with air cooling is that I'm going to have lots of fans anyway. I hope to have an AC64 cpu cooler, unless I get a TRUE. With the TRUE, I would have 2 120mm fans on it (or maybe more ). 2 120mm fans on video card, 2-4 120mm fans on case, and possibly a 5th on the top (if I mod a hole into it)

i also have a 92mm fan that I'm using on memory and CPU, and an 80mm that I will probably hand down to my brother.
