force windows to do a certain resolution?

is there a way to force windows to do a certain resolution?

i just got a 19'' lcd tv but right now i have it hooked up as a monitor. the native res is 1440x900. windows will only let me go up to 1024x768. my old monitor was a 17'' crt and with that i could put it on 1600x1200

what can i do

edit. by the way, ubuntu lets me run 1440x900 just fine

This is controlled by your display driver. Have you downloaded the latest display driver for your GPU? Does it differ whether you connect via the analog vs the DVI connection?

It may also be related to your memory capacity. other things to try is going to 16-bit color or lowering the refresh rate (just to see if its a memory issue). If interested, I can explain why thats the case.

sounds like th GPU. Some onboards have problems with widescreen resolutions. (especially if you don't have the driver installed)

The reason I believe it may be a memory issue is that your on-board GPU likely shares memory with system memory (on top of its 32MB dedicated). The ubuntu OS likely has a smaller footprint.

Can you try to either reduce the color-depth (allow 2x compression of pixels compared to unpacked 24bit RGB color) and/or reduce the refresh rate for the LCD? If its a memory issue _and_ the driver can adapt to that knowledge, it may be worth a try.

Most likely however the driver simply does not contain support for that resolution.

In that case, it must be the driver. You may want to do a search to see if someone has written/hacked a driver to support wide-screens for your on-board GPU for windows.

EDIT: I assume you have the SiS730 graphics chip (not totally sure). I did some searches for "widescreen" and "SiS730" and there are definitely threads discussing this. I did not easily find a resolution, but you might want to search focusing specifically on your GPU chip. Good luck.

I'm having a similar problem with this guy... Stuck with VGA at 1024 x 768. If I use a HDMI-DVI connection cable it says "Not supported" on my HDTV. Damn.

Try this (NT 5.1 Only - means XP, 2000 and Server 2003 - possibly a few others):

- Right click on "My Computer"
- Select Properties
- Goto the hardware tab
- Follow this:

- Click "No, not this time" (skip to next step if you have Windows Update disabled)
- Select Advanced
- Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install"
- Click "Have Disk"
- Route to the attached file (Attachment 64998)
- Click Open
- Click OK
- Click Next
- Click "Continue Anyway" (If this doesn't pop up you can skip this step)

See if you can change your resolution now - if not, reboot and try again
