GPU overclocking & artifacts

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, ever since I overclocked any GPU, I noticed that sometimes, I would overclock, would run perfectly the artifact scanner for x amount of time, and then I would run the scanner again and would artifact without change in temps. Am I missing something here? Am I supposed to OC the GPU gradually such as 5MHz steps?

If it is artifacting you have it too high, simple. Do multiple tests letting it heat up and cool down to ensure you aren't artifacting. As for how much you should increase it i will tell you how i do it.

1 - 50mhz intervals until a crash during stress test.

2 - Upon reboot round down where you were by 50mhz and proceed upwards by the smallest amount you can increase by until you hit artifacting.

3 - Take it down 1 interval and start raising the memory clock (write down your core clock) until you crash (usually a card crashes before artifacting from a memory overclock.)

4 - Take the core clock and reset it along with your last stable memory clock and run a hour long test.

Then you are done.

It was a driver issue, I was just able to pull one higher OC stable for one hour on the artifact scanner. Currently running BETA, hopefull the new WHQL will be out soon, it has been almost 2 months without WHQL drivers!

This is really weird, yesterday, I ran the artifact scanner for 120 minutes, not a single error, then I turned off my PC for the night, this morning, again, I start the artifact scanner and right away, the whole screen artifacts, PC locks up. *** is wrong, is this shi**y drivers? Everytime, I get a rock solid OC, and if I turn off my PC for a few hours, I will artifact right away upon reboot when running any 3D Apps.

sometimes ati tool shows errors if i force on temporal AA in the CCC.
and try running the 3D view for a few minutes before you start the scanning,i seem to get consistent results after warming up the card using 3D view rather than scanning right away.

I had similar problems once - sometimes I would artifact seemingly at random. The cause: unusually warm temperatures outside would raise the temp. on my graphics cards just enough to cause artifacting.

Also, you're probably aware but just in case, don't forget that if FRAPS is running the artifact scanner will report multiple artifacts.

I really wish there was another tool as powerful as ATI Tool. I sometimes think that it gives artifacts for no reason. I had a similar problem with my 2900Pro. I would run for an hour fine, then crash playing crysis. I would reboot and run it again, and it would artifact (artiface??) I also could acheive higher clocks on some days and not others, regardless of temps. This could have been the card as well. We'll see when I get my 8800gts next week.

That's exactly what I thought, but do you really think that a card really needs to warm up?
