all there is in the zip file you posted is a .BIN file.

Yeah, I use arctic silver 5 but i'm not too worried about it because i'll be replacing that fan shortly.

i'll try downloading the zip file again.

*Edit*

After much trial and error. a few dozen reboots and 15 cd's later success

Now I just gotta wait for my fan to come in before i start messing with the cpu.

hahaha. glad it worked. that bin file, burned straight onto a CD, should of worked first time. oh well at least it did in the end.

now get the cooler so we can start hurting that CPU

Yeah, I told my friends that if their power goes out and there is a bright light towards the country part of the city not to worry, my pc just either exploded or started working how God intended it.

DarkX9109: Somewhere earlier in this thread is a link to an .iso file that is a bootable image containing the P31 bios. Then you can boot that CD to a DOS prompt. The autoexec.bat file tells you the command syntax to burn the P31 bios.

HOWEVER: I have done this several times and although the new bios appears to flash correctly (i.e. the flash program exits normally) the PC always requires several resets or power cycles to start back up, and I can't tell if the update has taken or automatically reverted back to P06. CPUZ mainboard tab reports bios version PG 6.0.0 (or similar; I'm not there right now). Can someone tell me where to look to definitively confirm that the board is booting P31?

Great thread BTW, and many thanks to the learned overclockers who have shared their experiences so far.

As you can see I have same mobo and close to that processor (duo not quad)

I didn't mess with RAM settings at all
Make sure you are not using nTune (its terrible)
set the ratios to "Unlinked"
Make sure that spread spectrum is disabled
And you can leave voltages on automatic if you need (as long as you don't go over 1.45V-ish

To tell if you have the new bios, check your voltage choices. I had 4 or so previously, but now I have like 40

I finally got that zalman and installed it. after several scares (first power not comming on which was a disconnected power switch and then disk not detected which I managed to fix by connected my hard disk for what seems to be the first time, which is in and of itself odd because I've been using it somehow not connected all this time)

Anyway, the fan is installed and the pc is working but the temps still seem a tad bit high.

cores idling (very little work load) at around 39 celcius I'm going to run a stress test and update.

after a small stress test the temps only wen't up to 44 celcius so it's definately down 10 or so degrees and the AS5 hasn't had time to set in yet.

all in all I am pleased.

There is, however, a fan that is making noise that doesnt seem to be my zalman, it sounds like it may be a mobo fan or the gfx fan it's an annoying buzz.

nice work on the CPU fan.

and that noise is the little NB fan that comes with this board. makes all kinds of crazy sounds, but 680i boards need that fan, their chipsets could cook a barby.

yeah after further inspection, it is that fan. Little bugger must be clogged.

I'll clean it out tomorrow and reread all the OCin guides and start then.
