3.20 on q6600 on xfx 680i LT sli - Page 10

Ok, so I've been mucking around with my system some more since I'm not happy with having to run at 1.55 VCore to stabilize my system at a measly 3.2 -- I started back at stock 2.4 GHz and was able to run Prime95 for 24 hours stable at 1.12 VCore. I got 2.5 GHz 24 hours stable at 1.14 VCore. 2.6 GHz was 24 hours stable at 1.17 VCore. But here's where it gets weird. To get 2.7 GHz to even boot into windows without a crash, it took me 1.39 VCore. That's a hell of a jump from 1.17 to 1.39! 2.8 GHz took 1.42. Why such a jump from 2.6 to higher clock speeds?

Could this be related to my power supply? SpeedFan reports 10.61v on the 12v rail. At higher clocks when I have to raise the NB and SB voltages, it reports 9.81v on the 12v rail. My PSU has 40A on the 12v rail -- I'm running 4 GB RAM, GeForce 8800 GT, 2 SATA HDDs and 1 SATA DVD Burner, 2 120mm case fans -- should I really require more on the 12v rail??

You did unlink your ram right? My exact settings are

CPU 1.38v @ 3.2 Ghz stable... and everything else is auto. This board seems to report crazy low +12v readings in windows. In BIOS, it reports anywhere from 12.1 to 12.2 ish. See what it reports in BIOS for you.

I also noticed that when I raised the FSB, my ram MHz went down a lil.. so I just pushed it back so it ran at 800 MHz. I'm not sure what else to tell you since that's all I have to do to get this speed. You have nearly the same system as me. I bought a combo from CompUSA/Tigerdirect which included the OCZ ram, Motherboard, and cpu for $399. I've had the system for almost a week now.

I know heat is not your issue since you have a better cooler than I do. You mention 9.81 on your 12v... Look at my 12v reading...

I can't get any windows program to properly show my correct +12v. I've used 3 different power supplies and it shows around the same voltages.. I updated my BIOS to the latest NVIDIA version of BIOS from the XFX site. The BIOS update isn't what has me stable like this because I was also running these settings the first 2 days right out of the box without updating. Hell, I'm able to get 3.58 GHz stable with 1.48v (Although I've seen others with even lower voltages for that clock speed) I wish I could help you out some more

Edit: Ohh, and how the hell is my system temp 4c? I WISH!!!!

You've gotta change some of the offset values and whatnot to get correct readings. See my attached file. Download it and put it in your SpeedFan directory, replacing the file you've got in there (make sure you remove the .txt extension from the end -- oh, and backup your original first). Shutdown the program and restart it. It will name your fans properly, set the offsets where they should be, and possibly overwrite your temperature preferences, but those are easy to reset

I'll play more with voltages later and post back.

Since lot of us posting in this thread have very similiar systems you guys mind sharing your 3dMark06's? I'd like to do some comparisons. I currently don't have SLI, but chose this setup so I could upgrade in the future.

My 3D Mark is in my sig. I can get an unstable one about 400 pts higher, ie will run 3dmark but crashes under Everest or OCCT.

Heya, i've been reading through this thread and I think it is exactly what i've been looking for.

I'm new to overclocking but i have a system that is supposed to be practically designed for it, or so i've been told.

This is my System Info
Model : Custom
Chassis Type : Desktop
Operating System : Microsoft Windows Vista home premium
Processor
Number Of Processors : 1
Type : Intel Quad Core Kentsfield 2.4Ghz Q6600
Processors Bus Speed : 1066MHz
Motherboard: XFX nForce 680i LT SLI Socket 775
CPU Slot/Socket Type : Socket 775
Bios Manufacturer : Pheonix Technologies
Bios Version : 6.00PG
Graphics
Model : nVidia PCI-E NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT
Memory
Total RAM Installed : 4096 MB
Type : Corsair TWINX 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz E.P.P. (4 sticks at 1gb each)
Used RAM Slots: 4 of 4

So here's my question. Where can I update my bios? I went to XfX but their bios update didn't sound like it was for this board. Furthermore, when i run CPUz, it says i have an Nvidia 680i not a xfx 680i lt. (obviously that can't be true unless they slapped me with a motherboard that I did not order)

Though i know next to nothing about overclocking short of what i've read, I think i can manage to pull it off using all the other info in this thread.

Thx in advance for support.

hey buddy. welcome to the forums.

first things first, once you log in, click the User CP link at the top and fill in your system specs. just makes things easier.

second, the board you purchased, stock out of the shop, does have the old bios on it which makes the system think its a different board. thats ok, you want that as you get more voltage options.

go back through this thread, i cant remmeber what page it was on, maybe 6 or 7, there is a link to a file upload that is the P31 bios for this board. download that. it sounds confusing, but you will be wanting the 680i bios not the 680i LT bios. reason being, the 680i bios is much better, has more overclocking options related to voltages, and has generally proven to be more stable.

let us know when the bios update is installed, you should find how to do it on the same page as the link to the file. let me know if you cant find it, as i have the file on disk at home.

Yeah, I was reading through the pages before i had to head off to work, didn't mean to post a subject already covered.

Got a bit overzelous because i finally found exactly the thread that I was looking for after several days of searching.

So i downloaded the file you left, alt + f2 on restart and it went into the awdflash screen asking for the name of the file and what not. But i couldn't type anything in. I let it sit for 20 min or so before restarting the pc.

CPUz shows the right mobo now, but still showing phoenix award bios 6.00 pg. I'm unsure if the flash was successful.

As soon as my fan comes in and I replace the pos fan i got from the parts store, i'll attempt my first OC.

haha its all good man, wasnt having a go at you or anything. we love helping out the fellow OC'er.

the file you downloaded, it needs to be burned onto a cd. then when you press ALT-F2, it should automatically search the cd and fine the bios file, and begin updating. to be honest, i cannot remember what award version number it should read..but CPU-Z should report the P31 bios.

just keep coming back here for help when you need it.

Oh, I know you weren't upset.

in anycase, i burned the file onto a cd and let the machine do it's thing, but it seems to not do anything at all. I'll just let it run overnight.

*Edit*
Having trouble loading the file it seems. Probably because I didn't make it a boot disk and my current burning software doesn't make boot disks. I got class in a few hours, so I'll download something tomorrow. I hate leaving work unfinished -.-

Something troubles me greatly though. Obviously I don't have anything stock since i built this rig myself, but my cpu cooler is pretty crappy anyway. The cores appear to idle around 51 celcius. To me that is an absurd temperature even for a crappy cooler.

i got my zalman on the way and the day it arrives and is installed i'll begin my first OC attempt. hopefully my pc won't explode.

yeah that is a fairly high temp i think, 51c @ 2.4ghz??. im not 100% sure since i watercool mine, but i dunno if thats right. have you re-seated the fan, or applied some Arctic Silver Pro 5?

as for the bios update, you dont need to make a boot disk, im pretty sure if you extract all the files out of the zip and burn them straight to a cd, it should work fine.
