ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN THE REALTEK! I have it on my mobo, most annoying thing EVER! Nothing ever works properly, constantly having to fix things and sound is very average. In simple it just total crap! /rant

Mine works fine... Only problem with it is with CSS surround sound. Besides that, everything is beautiful.

I found this thread on Google while searching for something completely different, clicked on it, and found that all the responses are totally WRONG. So I felt like bumping it with the correct answer.

The ALC889 codec is WAY better than the Audigy. It is Realtek's top-of-the-line HD Audio codec. It is much newer, has many more features, and most importantly, has a better DAC. Take that Audigy out! In fact the ALC889, in terms of sound quality, is ON PAR with the entire X-Fi line, minus the Elite Pro.

So kids, remember: do your research before regurgitating "what you heard."

While it probably does have better sound quality than most Audigy cards, it does not necessarily produce better sound quality than the X-Fi line. SNR isn't everything.

SQ on most PC sound devices can be determined by the Power supply+DAC+Output stage, and theres really not much difference between the ALC889 and the 6-channel-single-DAC-chipped X-Fi's in those respects. They are essentially on-par in reference to analog output.

They both draw from the mobo supply
They both have similar-spec'ed DACs
They both have an op-amp output stage, not sure what model, but I'm sure they are similar.

If you guys intend on running Vista or Win 7 stay away from creative cards would be my advice. I would swear by Creative sound cards as they always trump onboard by a long shot. I have the X-fi Xtream Music and X-fi Fetality. Both these boards worked just great in Win XP. Upgrade to Win Vista or 7 and you will find the sound from these to be not too impressive at all. It sounds over sampled to me and it feels like the sound card is trying too hard to deliver the goods. The drivers are absolutely horrid for both models. Given that Vista has been out for almost two years now creative does not seem to get their act together. Drivers consistently break and need to be re-installed on Win 7. Sometimes every other day. I switched to my Realtek ALC888 on board and I was like WoW. They sound really good and not too muddled at all. It actually sounds great both on my Logitech speakers and Sennhieser headphones. So don't alway believe the hype. Creative was a great company but now there are far better options out there.
