window cutting question

Thread Starter
Hey there all, I'm getting a dremel tommaro to cut my side panel window and I've got a question about the actual cutting, I also have a jigsaw at my disposal which i used before to make a window, without going into to much details let's just say i didnt really like the outcome, accuracy wise the saw didnt go over corners very well at all, so will it be ok if i just cut the straight line with the jig and use the dremel for the corners? it seems a much easier tool for the job...
also I wanna cut a fan grill into the acrylic itself, should I just draw an outline and dremel \\ sand the outline? or will that not work?
one ladt question, how thick should thw window be? I'm using a c channel for the edges.

Thanks!

well cutting lines with the jigsaw works great just take it slow. The dremal works great in tight corners just make sure you take it slow. If you haven't cut with one before try to find some scrap and practice with it, it will save alot of headache. To answer your question, it will work very well, just take it slow and careful.

As far as cutting fan holes with a dremel, it's hard to make it perfect. If you can get a whole saw with a drill it makes a world of difference, even more so with the acrylic. The acrylic will have a tendency to melt, so it again really helps if you can practice before the actual cut.

I like to use 1/8 inch for my windows but you can go a little thicker if that's what you have.

In the end patience wins the war.

after thinkin about it some I'm going to go with a fanless side panel, the buttom and two front intake 120's should cover the load, abouse the drill saw things I'm assuming you mean a cup saw ? that you attach to a drill... i've had trouble finding 80mm cups no to mention 120...

nyway thanks for the advice, i'm gonna practice on some old acrylic i've got lying around and some old side panels.

i did a project on a CM 690. I see you have the same case. what you should do is get some cardboard and cut out the shape you want your window to be. use painters tape (blue) and tape up the entire area your are going to cut. use a pen and trace out the shape with the cardboard onto the tape.

i used a rotary tool to cut a small slit on the bottom left (theoretically farthest from front of comp) for a hole for jigsaw blade. used a standard reinformed cutting disc. as for a jigsaw blade.. i used an 18tpi blade.. still a little rough imo so i may suggest getting something in the 20-24tpi range. put panel on top of a empty box when you are goin to cut. i personally used the jigsaw for the entire cut. sure its not perfect but its good enough for me (look at my project tuxedo in sig). you could either use the sander thing from the rotary tool or get a metal hand file and smooth out the edges..

as for the arcrylic, i used a jigsaw as well. the hand blade from home depot completely sucks and doesnt work. lol. i got 1/8" arcylic panel. most ppl use that thickness. not too thick, not too thin. i got a hole saw from Lowes (very expensive >.<"). The only size i know is 4.5" for a 120mm fan. as for a fan grill in teh acrylic... uhh.. i dont know how you gonna do that.. well.. i guess you can do it with the uhh.. rotary cutting bit. but arcylic melts with anything that rotates. lol. whether its a disc, sander, or bit. not sure how you are designin the grill but maybe u can draw somethin out and will suggest something after that.

I've done acrylic 80mm holes before, with a cup drill it goas right through so quickly it doesnt have much time to warm up, i see from your thread that u must have used something similar (awesome stuff), btw is your window on double sided tape?
yah i used a hole saw or err.. "cup drill".. lol. i drilled a hole in the middle for the middle bit thing to go thru. the amount of tpi on the saw was too low. had a hard time cutting hole.. kept grabbing the acrylic and spinning with it >.<"

yah. using 3m double sided tape =P good stuff

This is the guide I used for my window. It's really easy. And I didn't have metal blades for my jig saw, so I just used metal snipes. It worked great.
Hope this helps..

(I still haven't put C channel on my window yet, it's on the way from FrozenCPU though.)
