Looking to upgrade a PC for a friend...

Thread Starter
He has a dying 939 rig that he desperately needs to replace. All he needs is a cpu, mobo, ram upgrade...

So i was thinking on getting him a E2xxx and a P35 mobo, and a 4gb kit of ram. He rally wants the 4gb ram option and has $300 at the maximum for this upgrade...

I am pretty sure on the cpu and ram. I am going to give him my ram, and pick up a 2x2gb kit for myself. I need some help with a motherboard. I was going to pick up a blood iron from newegg, but i cant seem to find one. I was also looking at the DS4, but i want to keep the motherboard cost down so the difference can go into a faster chip. I need something that can run reliably at a ~430+ fsb. But that may or may not happen. It's been awhile since i have looked into the budget side of pc hardware and totally sure what board to get...

Any ideas? Probably going to grab everything from newegg here in the next few days...

DS3L doesn't have RAID. You need DS3R.

If i were i would take Abit IP-35-E, because it overclocks great, low Vdroop and for price 85€, will be good enough to bring e2_ _ _ to 2.8Ghz and more

i think i'm going to go with the $74 E2160 the $150 P5K-E, and some $116 Geil memory...

my total after shipping is $346. I think i can manage to talk him into getting this config.

The ram im getting, is going into my motherboard, and im giving him my 4 1gb sticks. This was already discussed. So if need be, i will give him some cash if he wants... my guess is that since im helping him, he will just pay the difference...

Any objections on this setup?? Anyone have a different motherboard recommendation??

P5K-E is a good board. I think it is ready to go.

gigabytes products seem to be quite popular among the forums here. i have a ds3l and i know you require the raid feature so maybe the ds3r. im pretty sure people have attained some high FSBs with this line of board, and its pretty cheap only $130, his 300 budget is very feasible with the E2xxx series chip and selling him used memory... im still new to intel myself, but thats what i would do.
