Help please, dont want to blow my rig up!

Thread Starter
hey i bought a new rig. I am no stranger to building PC's but one thing i am a stranger to is Overclocking. Now though i have a q6600 and after playing crysis i was dissapointed with the low framerates. I know this machine is capable of MUCH more.

here are my specs:

ASUS P5N-E SLI (havent changed BIOS)
Intel Q6600 2.4GHz per core (stock cooling)
eVGA 8800gt superclocked 512mb (also stock cooling)
3gb RAM 800MHz (bought 4 x 1gb sticks but one is defect )
700w Power supply

i know it is possibly a very common request to have all the details read out on how to overclock my proccessor, but seriously after spending all the money i have saved on a new rig, reading over other threads isnt enough reassurance for me to start messing around in BIOS and such.

So i would be greatly thankfull if someone could give me a helping hand on puching the speed of my q6600.

thanks again for reading

I'm not an expert, but I'm thinking with a game like Crysis, it's very possible your Video card is what is lagging your frame rate.

Also, you're going to suffer a RAM efficiency degradation without them being paired, but I think there are stipulations attached to that statement, I'm not sure.

There are many here more wise and versed and I, those are just my thoughts, friend. I hope your problem gets resolved!

i researched my graphics card and it is meant to be able to run crysis at a pretty steady rate. the card actually came with crysis aswell. I know the ram is an issue, which is why i am looking into selling the generic ram for some good quality ram such as kingston. I would still like to try and overclock my q6600 though as i have heard it works to great effect in improving performance. thanks again.

What settings are you running Crysis on?
Anything above High will be too much for your (and anybody elses) system.

at first i was running it on high, but i knew that this was pushing it, so i put it to medium but even on that i am unhappy. It is not just crysis i am unhappy with. i am unhappy with world in conflict aswell. I know these are games that require high end machines but im pretty sure i should be getting a better average fps of 30 on world in conflict set to medium.

Depending on the cooling you should be able to OC fairly well. I suggest you search threads about overclocking this processor. It would be a long and tedious post to examine and explain every little bit about overclocking. I would say with stock cooler you should be able to hit 3.0 nice and easy.

Go by little increments of 2-5.
And if it stops, just increase your vcore.

What settings are you trying to run it on though? It should do High no problem, but for very high you need two cards at least.

I wouldn't recommend using 3GBs though for OCing though, since you need to run it in single channel mode, and lots of motherboards are picky about using more than two sticks.

And Kingston isn't good quality ram, its essentially generic value ram, you're going to want to look into brands like Mushkin, Geil, Crucial, Corsair etc... Basically anything in the $45-80 range that has heat spreaders.

Also, since Intels quad cores are essentially two dual cores mashed together, its basically twice the heat as a C2D, you're really going to want to look into at least an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro, preferrably an Ultra-120 or a Tuniq Tower if you're case can fit it.

Edit: I just realized you have the same mobo as I do, it should be running rev. 0703, don't uprade to the 08 version since people have been having problems OCing, and watch out for an FSB hole from 290-333, but since you're using a Q6600 it won't matter past 3GHz.

Kingston is not good at overclocking high, they might burn easy. ;D Almost killed mine.
