installing audio and video codec in ubuntu 7.10

i was woundering how you would go about installing an audio/video codec so i can listen to music and watch movies? uber noob at linux so be specific please...thanks!

try i think its called automatix its a simple way to install codecs but im unsure i havnt used it

I just started to play a movie and it auto downloaded the codec for me

When you open up a file in Totem media player, it will link you to the codecs you need and install them for you. That is probably the easiest way.

what about codecs for ventrelo?

Enter this in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

That should pretty much give you all the formats/codecs you need.
