Help me install Unrar.GZ in CentOS linux

Hey there guys.

I am trying to install an unrar application within CentOS linux using a command line install. I am very stuck.

I have obtained the file named unrar_3.7.7-centos.gz and I have tried the install line of tar -xzvf .

I get this

Quote:
tar: unrar_3.7.7-centos.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
Now I then decided to try the ''Yum install'' command however all I get this is

Quote:
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
update 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
base 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
addons 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
extras 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Parsing package install arguments
No Match for argument: unrar_3.7.7-centos.gz
Nothing to do
This is getting rather annoying now. its odd however that it is just a .GZ file rather than a TAR.GZ. However I have barely any experience in linux so everything is a mystery to me lol.

Any help is much appreciated

A .tar file is simply an archive - it bands a bunch of files into one. A .gz file is a file compressed with gzip. A .tar.gz file, then, is a bunch of files grouped together then compressed.

If you have a .gz file that is not a .tar.gz file, use gzip to decompress. The tar utility with the -z flag (such as "tar -xzf") calls gunzip to decompress then untars. Since you don't have a tar file, just call gunzip directly

Try this:

cd /(directory of the fle)
gunzip unrar_3.7.7-centos.gz

Or try:

yum update
yum install unrar

Let me know if either of those work.

Sorry for the late reply guys. Well I eventually managed to get it sorted. My problem after my initial post was that I could not get Unrar to install correctly via a file I was downloading. I then used ''YUM'' to grab the file for me which was also suggested above.

I finally managed to get everything installed W00T

Cheers again guys.
