To Vista or Not To Vista?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm gonna be giving my PC a good old wipe and starting afresh.

I have been lucky enough to obtain a copy and license of Vista x64. Should I take the plunge? Can my PC handle it ok, with Aero etc?

Would I have problems finding suitable drivers for my hardware?

Many Thanks
Jaguar

Vista x64 is doing amazing in performance. I went from XP x86 and noticed an AWESOME change. You will NOT regret it, especially with your rig!

I'd say go for it, as long as its not Vista Basic.

Whoa Whoa Whoa..

Are you telling me I should get Vista x64 too?

Because I really want to run Crysis in DX10 on Very High.

I'm really wanting to take the plunge.

Vista isn't nearly as performance damaging as people say. Most games are either going to perform just about the same, or a little better. Source engine games will get a bit of a boost thanks to the 64 bit part.

Expect it to feel more like a completed XP than an entirely new OS.

Make sure you get all the updates and hot fixes.

Also, wait a few days after having it before deciding. Mine seemed to be a bit slow for the first 3 days, and on the 4th day the performance seemed to double.

Be careful to grab the 64 bit versions of everything, I had issues with daemon tools, til I realized that I had the older 32 bit version.

I am never ever going back to XP! Been on Vista for 4 months, and I love it

no you shouldn't ave any problems. Ive been runing xp64 for about 2 1/2 years now and have not had any problems. I'm also switching to vista x64 tomorrow (my stuff is supposed to arive sometime today).

Its just based on prefrence. I upgraded because i just got 4gigs of ram and i wanted media center to stream movies/music to my xbox and other pc's. windows 32bit only supports 2gig of memory so movin to MCE2005 wouldn't make any sense. I dont forsee any prblems with movin to vista x64 especially since (for me) xp64 never gave me a problem.

x64 bit os's are more secure and better for the high end rigs. but vista can be noticably slower in some aspects (boot time) depending on how its configured. read up on some tweaks to improve its performance (enableing multi-core cpu support on boot up to decrease time etc.)

the only thing thats gonna piss me off are those stupid pop ups that ask to confirm every action that you want to do, but you can disable it.

I was an avid fan of xp for the longest time, but I decided to try out vista 64 when I built my rig. If I didn't like it, whatever, was only $100, but it turned out to be the best $100 I spent on my PC. Takes a little bit to getting use to the cancel and allow stuff and some of the menus, no big deal any more. I think, Vista is one of the most visually pleasing OS's out there and have had slim to no problems with it and stabilty has been rock solid. This is just my 2 cents, I would personally find a friend that has Vista and play around with it, see if you like it.

I knew we would get to the point where this is laughable.

XP is bad now...
