About a WD 500gb External Drive (need help)

Hey All ...

Having stuggled with my small hard drives, I am really in the market for a nice sized External Hard drive just to be able to save all my movies, pics, and music and be able to take them with me. Here's what Im lookin for :

~ A simple, easy USB drive that will show up as a removable device when plugged in (for me, that would be F. Something that works with XP, and doesnt need fancy software or anything running to make it able for me to transfer files on and off it.

I was looking at this 500gb WD drive, since its only $100 in Staples this week, but some reviews were saying it has some kind of encryption that doesnt allow it to transfer stuff off of it to another computer (which sucks, because another huge reason I need one is to xfer avi's and mp3's to my girlfriend's Gateway laptop, she is running Vista .. im sick of using 3-4 blank dvd's each time I want to give her stuff) The drive in question is located here :

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/st...&cmArea=SEARCH

Can someone tell me if this will fit my needs ? I understand it would be better to format it to NTFS, which is fine with me. Im open to anything that fits my needs.

Thanx in advance !!

This drive should fit your needs. I personally have the older style My Book 250GB and it works fine with any computer that wants to read data from it.
I would suggest NTFS if you will be putting files on it larger than several GB. Otherwise, FAT32 is better because more operating systems can read that format.

About the security thing, it doesn't appear that this drive as any kind of built-in encryption. So, unless you encrypt the data on it you won't have a problem reading the data on any other computer. That person probably had an issue with permissions where only a certain user was allowed to read/write data. There is an easy fix to this:
1)Right click on the folder and select properties.
2)Click the security tab.
3)For the everyone profile (or your profile), click edit.
4)Select Full Control.

This should work as long as you are logged in with admin rights.

Thanx for the reply Bru !! +rep for you

And no, Im not going to be putting single files greater than a couple gigs on it. My range will definitly be under 1GB per file, and even then, only a few avi's will be that big (maybe in the 800-900mb range).

Its going to be mostly for pics, mp3's, and avi's .. maybe backing up some programs so when I format, I have them readily available (stuff like Winamp, AIM, CD Burner stuff, etc ...)

At $100, I cant see how thats not a great deal, as personally Im a huge fan of WD products, and have only built 1 computer that didnt use them (it was an IBM drive and it did die on me lol).

Thanx .. most probably grabbing this today
