A(nother) What Should I Do? Thread: THIS ONE HAS A PURPOSE!

OK:

Firstly, I dont want to turn this into yet another of the endless threads that goes on:

"OMG! Im such a n00b - I cant possibly decide whether or not to move to vista or not - please decide for me?!"

Indeed, I'd like to think my question has a purpose and I am merely relying on the opinions of well informed and friendly people, before I commit to a purchase.

Simply put, a power cut during boot up on my XP machine today corrupted a large chunk of registry and boot files. I was able to "fix it" using the recovery console with the trusty ol' "chkdsk /r" command and get back into windows, but suffice to say, its not exactly 100% working.

Realistically, I need to reformat (this isnt a problem). However, I have a VALID XP June 2002 sp1 cd key that wont work with ANY of the XP cds I have because I cant find the disk that came with the key.

So here's the thing:
A) Is there any way that I can get hold of an identical disk that would actually work?

Or B) Should I just move to Vista?

Before a stream of vista/xp fanboy statements floods this thread, please understand that:

1) I have used vista for a 30 day trial. It was 32 bit. I quite liked it, didnt really notice too many performance differences between both OS. Never bought a proper copy, so went back to my legal XP on reformating.

2) I think I would like to use 64 bit. I will soon be upgrading to another 2gb of RAM.

However, I would also like to get a X-Fi XtremeMusic: are there still driver issues with x64 Vista? Are there any other driver related issues that I might run into?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read through the above and helping me out!

I use Vista x64 with my sig rig, and love it.

I see no point in some one with a decent system re-installing XP, it is just delaying your move to a more complete operating system.

There are slight issues with Vista, but Creatives "alchemy" fixes that.

I had 2 gb of RAM, and Vista used about 1 gb with everything on. However when I played games, Vista deallocated most of that, and was at around 200 mb.

I found the biggest difference (other than the 64 bit speed increase in Source games) was that Vista felt more complete, and less glitchy / buggy than XP.

Driver issues still exist in the Vista and SB X-Fi cards... specially 64bit
the spare 2GB will not be fully used in XP obviously, but a copy of vista will set you back what... 200+ dollars?

for the XP you can call in the KEY and its free and works all the time, I had the same issue, after I reformatted my Father's PC for him, had to read the key off of the sticker on the side of the case...

Thanks for the quick reply trueg50!

From your comments Im guessing that you'd agree with my decision to move to 4gb with regards to the deallocation of the memory?

And also, having never had a X-Fi product, could you quickly describe how alchemy works? IM going to look it up now - but Id appreciate your thoughts! thanks!

Lol! yer I ring them up every time - my problem is that even the sp1 iso i downloaded doesnt accept the cd key i have. its really weird, but it seems like that it will only work with an OEM June 2002 sp1 copy of the disk - and god knows where my one's gone!

I say it would be very wise to go with vista. I love it. Much more snappier then XP.
But not trying to be a fanboy, here's my reasons:

Vista is the future like it or not. DirectX10, etc... Main goal of most PC enthusiasts is trying to stay ahead of being 'outdated'. If you want your computer to be more 'futureproof' go with Vista.

If you want to buy more ram, you will definately need Vista64. Again, futureproof. A couple years from now, games could be using 3 or more gigs of ram.

I find vista quicker then XP in pretty much everything including boot time. I also have an easier time overclocking and staying stable then I did with XP.

I'm really tired as it's almost 3am EST here, so I can't think of much more atm but hope that helps some..
