No prompt at xp logon screen

It seems that computer problems come in bunches.

Well I can get to the screen but all I get is the Windows XP logo, no username displayed or password prompt.
The last thing that I did was have PartitionMagic format a a spare hard drive. I have tried safemode, last known good config, the ctrl -alt-del trick, etc, etc. I have also gone into the "ultimate boot cd" and loaded the registry hive but the service isn't even listed. I have tried removing the spare hdd but still nothing. Anyone???

You say that you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del but you must hit it 2 or 3 times to get the classic login dialog box. If that failed then short of booting with a Bart PE disk and editing the registry your best option IMO is the perform a repair install of XP. That will allow you to get Windows up and running and not lose your data. You can do a complete reinstall if you prefer but just back up all of your important data first.

That I am not absolutely sure. I have heard of this before but never had to fix it that way. You would be better off doing either a repair install or complete reinstall. The repair install keeps all of your settings and apps but repairs any system files that may be corrupt or missing. The only drawback is if the reason that this happened is a virus then it will still be there to reinfect you.

Go Dawgs!!

I use an NLite slipstreamed disc that has had a ton of components removed. The repair option isn't avaliable. Is it ok to use the "leave the current file system intact" option?

Sorry about taking so long to reply. If you just "leave the current file system intact" it will still do a complete install but it will not format your drive. Instead it simply puts a .OLD extension on your old Windows directory and Doc and settings folder. It also leaves your program folder intact but most of the programs that were installed will work anymore due to the fact that your registry is going to be completely new. But with all that being said it will allow you to reinstall without losing your data. I hope this helps even though its kinda late.

Update: I found a registry key that I edited with a boot cd to force the "classic" logon menu. There is only one itsy-bitsy problem. I get rejected like a small girl playing professional basketball!! I type in the correct user and password as well as trying without a pass, but it won't let me in. Please help
