The PlayStation 3 sold slightly better in its first 14 months of availability than the popular Xbox 360 thanks to solid sales abroad, says a homebrew estimate from VG Chartz.
PS3 doing better than initiall believed?
Maybe more people buy and like the PS3 than meets the online eye, that is if unofficial numbers from sales tracker VG Chartz are to be believed.
According VG Chartz, Sony has sold more than 10 million PS3s worldwide through January, something the Associated Press corroborated on Tuesday. By contrast, the Xbox 360 didn't reach the 10 million mark on global VG Chartz charts until June 2007, some four months after the PS3.
Further analysis of the numbers reveal why: the PS3 enjoys consistent sales worldwide in all major markets. The Xbox 360, meanwhile, sells lopsidedly better in the U.S. than Europe and is widely considered a failure in Japan.
Despite its accomplishments, the PS3 has been widely criticized by outspoken pundits and consumers alike since launch, something that has largely simmered down in recent months thanks to a price drop and better games, particularly those released during the holidays.
Adding to the momentum is today's fresh announcement that Toshiba will discontinue its HD DVD business, making Sony's Blu-ray the optical HD standard, and the PS3 that much more compelling as a product.
That article doesn't paint the whole picture though.
Most of the PS3's lead can be attributed to a large spike in sales which resulted from the European launch in March 2007. Overall, the 360 spent a larger portion of time leading sales, by a smaller margin, and sales for both consoles are relatively consistent with each other.
I'm going to be blunt about it, but any speculation is pretty much meaningless, and 2008 is essentially up in the air.
The only thing next-gen about the Wii is the controller. It's marketed as a console for the family. The PS3 and Xbox360 are for the screaming gamer type, and the PS3 for early adopter to Blu-Ray.

it is saying that over the first 14 months the ps3 sold more. how is that only a partial picture?

Yes it is, it's a gaming system. Just because the controller has an additional function (motion sensing) doesn't make it a seperate class and therefore not comparable. And you can indeed compare laptop sales to desktop sales.
There is no reason you CAN'T compare them.
And also, everyone and their brother already has a 360, I'm not surprised by this. But I doubt that it outsold the Wii.
I'll put $10 on the ps3 for 2008 though. Any takers?
(edit) No, reaper is right triple play. The Wii is NOT compeating with the x360 and ps3 at all. It's not designed for hardcore gamers, it's designed for casual gamers. A compleatly different demographic.

Well, the 360 did have to initially compete with the PS2, as that was still a very strong seller at the time. There were also shortages due to low yields (due mainly to the RRoD defect) in the first few months. So I wouldn't say either console had a very smooth start.

Everyone has a Wii, while it tends to be either the PS3 or XBOX360, and not both for most. There are a few people with both, the majority has one or the other... and of course, a Wii.
Sorry. When I say everyone, I don't mean every single person in the world. However, the Wii is outselling the PS3 and XBOX360 combined. I'm guessing that people aren't buying multiple Wiis, so more people have the Wii than either the PS3 or XBOX360.
Interesting to note is that the Wii has NOT outsold the 360 AND the PS3 together. So are there more hardcore gamers than "family" gamers, despite all that has been said?

Agreed.

not that many people have a 360. Everyone and their brother has a PS2 or gameboy. 360 is no where near even the original XBox yet.
No the Wii is not comparable to the PS3/360. One is going for more casual gameplay with funky controls and dated hardware, the others are going for hardcore gaming with advanced features for the HD era. Not to mention to started at a price point ALOT lower than the PS3 and 360.

NO. They are consoles meant for gaming. All three of them. So you CAN compare them, and the wii is beating both of them. Just because the PS3 is more powerful doesn't mean its in a whole nother class. The type of hardware doesn't matter, its still a gaming console meant for gaming made by a gaming company, same as MS and PS3. Because if you really want to look at it that way, I can say the PS3 isn't a real gaming console, its just an overqualified blu-ray player. I DO NOT AGREE WITH THAT AT ALL. Just saying.
Quit counting the wii out, because its the real competition to beat.

I've seen a lot of parents and grandparents using the Wii. I haven't seen a single person over 30 touch an Xbox360.
Sales should get an initial push with bluray now as the sole hd format. If Sony can time it's releases of Home along with 1st party and 3rd party at good intervals, 2008 should be a very good year.

Congrats, you've seen different people playing different consoles, but it does nothing to show that the wii isn't in the same category. The wii reaches out to a wide audience, still a gaming console nonetheless!
I still think it's in a different category. Partly because of the difference in sales, and partly because the hardware is about 1/10 as powerful as the other two.

So an ipod can't be compared to a zune or iriver because of the sales? And a linux computer can't be compared in terms of sales because ones not powerful?
