So I took the test.

Thread Starter
The EPA Cert test back in 1998 or so. On the card they sent me, I'm a certified technician Type 1 & 3... (little disappointed I didn't get universal) That test was the hardest test I took in my life. Anyone else think it was difficult? Be honest

My dad has his own HVAC business and while retired, I learned alot from doing jobs with him as a kid. Though that was large scaling cooling. Centrificals, etc.. He'd send his employee's to handle residential and automotive stuff. I'd tag along too, just not as often.

It's been almost 9 years since I worked on an AC unit. But I'm now determined to build my own phase change cooling for my CPU. Seeing the prices of some of these prebuilt units, I want to cry. The markup is INSANE.

I've have access to HVAC wholesalers and visit them frequently for other needs. Since I plan on building my own unit, I'm going to keep a running tally on cost. If it's going to be as cheap as I think it will be, maybe I'll start selling the damn things for a quarter the price.

Soon as I start getting the parts, I'll create a thread and you can all follow along. I'll post the cost of each part that I buy (much cheaper if you have your own HVAC business license) and you guys can comment. I may make some slight improvements over current builds. I see alot of room for innovation, especially in the prebuilt units.

Sounds good and good luck.
Yes Mach and Vapo have incredible markup.
I think you'll find though that beating the 1/3 mark is hard, currently what I'm doing and its in a non profitable zone almost where I'm better off selling other units or getting a by the hour minimum wage job.

Good luck, hope it goes well. Keep us posted ^^.

i thought test was weird.

Core and section 1 i thought were a joke. I got my results last night. I got 25/25 on core, 23/25 on 1, but section 2 and 3 i thought were insanely hard. I got 20/25 on 3, but i failed section 2 as well.I got 17 1 more and i would have passed. I took the test during finals week so i didn't study at all for the epa test.

Anywho, you will find that things add up so much faster then you think. Do you have access to a machine shop? if not then you gotta spend a good chunk of $ on evaps, Doubt you have condensers the proper size? those are pricey for the small ones for single stages. Idk, little stuff like that. Cap tubing, copper tube(1/4", 5/16", 3/8"), Suction flexline (i like bronze), Filter drier(i like ones with built in access), et cetera.

What refrigerants do you have access to?

Best of luck to you.

Regards
