Where to learn TCP/IP and Networking

Thread Starter
I'm looking for some online solutions to learning about TCP/IP and Networking. Preferably something that offers labs and that won't break the bank.

Cisco --CCNA. I am taking the course. It is pretty good. You learn all that and alot more. Like routing protocols like RIP, EIGRP, and OSPF.

+1.... unsure if they offer it online... you could just buy the study guide for the CCNA bootcamp. would have labs, etc.

I think I saw this at Borders the other day. How hard is it for a n00b to learn from it?

welll........ if you opened the last page of the study guide...... it'd blow your hair back... if you start at the beginning, you MIGHT be able to wing it. The bootcamp is really meant for IT pro's to brush up and take the CCNA certification, not to teach a new. You really have to think about how much you want to put into this john. I have 2 years of college invested in my networking know how.....

like fury said it takes sometime with books, but if you actually work in the industry you'll likely get thrown into the fire where you'll p/u the hands on part and then the book part becomes boring

Ok, good to know. I'm not worried about a challenge and will certainly check out the cisco course but can you recommend a more layman's introduction? Something that can give me a foundation to learn from?

Yes, studying for the Cisco CCNA and passing the exam is the best way to learn networking on a basic level, but it is more oriented towards operating and configuring Cisco routers/switches mostly... if you know your binary stuff and hex conversions real good, then you're good to go... you need a lot of that when you're doing variable subnetting and CIDR.

If you don't want to get into the Cisco networking side, you should try some other TCP/IP course that is more generic, and not as specific, where they don't go deep into hardware specifics.

The hard part is... everything ties together.... You can learn bits and pieces of networking, but to actually have "background" or "Base" knowledge you're really looking at about 2 college text books worth of information (cisco semester 1 and 2).

OSI model
routing protocols.
ip conversion
trunking setups
binary conversion
manual subnetting
