Idea for a TF2 map!

I've been thinking about getting into some mapping and came up with an idea that I think I'm willing to try out.

I was thinking of a ctf map based around two computers right next to each other, and it would be around the same scale as de_rats from CS. Basically the object would be to steal the intel... literally!


I'm not sure on the sizes or scales right now but it could end up being smaller in size (players about the size of capacitors) or a more traditional rats size, with the map encompassing an entire computer desk.


I'm still brainstorming it, basically going off of the idea of going into a computer and stealing the intel, so it will probably change and it might not even work out, since theres nothing worse than a bad TF2 map.


I'm open to suggestions on the hardware to use for the cases, it won't end up looking photorealistic or anything, but there will be decals and stuff. I was thinking the red team will be an AMD/ATi based system with the blu team an intel/nVidia based system.

If you did it, perhaps they could get it into the OCN server rotation...

Make one water cooled, with tubing and pretty colors everywhere, for the Red base. Then the blue base can be air cooled, with Blue LED fans and CC lights everywhere.

Ya but who water cools an AMD?

Anyways I hammered out a basic map (no pun intended) just to get the dimensions right, I've added some red guidelines to help you distinguish between the actual map and the trippy void space.

I think I'm going to make it a little bigger.




Edit: Increased the size by 25%, added a skybox to limit the nausea associated with playing the map.

Ok I'm bumping this to inform everyone that I'm putting this project on hold, since I'm still new to mapping I'm going to create a standard map first just to learn the ins and outs of Hammer and the unique style associated with TF2.

If you're wondering the map is basically going to be a remake of cs_assault, but using the 2fort style, basically theres going to be two warehouses, nearly identical to the assault warehouse, separated by a road with sewers connecting both underneath. I managed to sketch out a nearly complete design during my math 101 class and I'm just starting the actual 3d design right now.

Heres an early screenshot of the red building, I'm doing all of this from memory of the hours I used to spend in 1.6 playing assault. I'm trying to keep it as close as possible, but of course there are things like sliding doors, ladders etc.. that I can't do so they will have to be left out. In the end I'll be happy with "hey this is assault!" I'm also planning on making the roof accessible only for soldiers and demos, and if they're crafty enough, engineers. There won't be too much strategic advantage considering they'll be partially visible to the snipers in the other building and the recent cuts to their ammunition, but get a dispenser up there and it'll be hell going front door
