Vista won't recognize new harddrive...

Thread Starter
I just received another 320GB Barracuda, because my old one had the sata tab broken off of it. I just changed it out and my BIOS recognizes the drive, however, I can't get it to show up in Vista. Some help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Download and burn the seagate bootable disk tools from their website. There is an ISO version that you can boot up and use to prepare the disk for use. It will format a usable NTFS partition and then you should be good to go.

They have one called Seatools and one called Diskwizard. You need to read up on it on their website and figure out which you need.

This may help

vista does have a built in disk utility he can format, or if i took it wrong and he doesnt have it formatted.
Another thing could be jumper pins, make sure youve got that drive configured properly for your system.

Open the control panel and click on Administrative tools. Then click on Computer management, and finally Disk Management. On the right pane you should see your new drive as unformatted. Just double click it, or right click and format, to format the drive to be recognized by Vista.

Ok well I did that thanks. Now it says:

Disk 1 298GB Online, but also says 298GB Unallocated. It still doesn't show up under my computer as a drive.

guys im pretty sure he means his old drive DIED (sata pins BROKE off) so im assuming his new HD isnt being detected when he boots on the Vista DVD.

Try getting "bootit NG" Its a disk utilities live CD, boots into a desktop like environment and lets format and whatever else to the hard drive. though when it boots it asks you if you want to install push no or "N" cause it installs a trial bootloader that nags you to buy the full version.. After you push no it'll boot onto the CD, you format ur hard drive and you should be good to go.

EDIT: Mah B

You need to right click the volume (long bars at the bottom half of the window) in disk management and click format.

No, it's being detected by windows now. It just won't show up under Computer next to my Raptor drive. And yes, I did initialize it.
