Get a life.....These news articles are getting old to all of us. This is OCN....the day you can OVERCLOCK(.net) your PS3 then you can post. Until then leave the crappy console news on Gametrailers.

/rant

Now I am off to play something quality on a real machine
Not that I feel the need to justify the news I post to newb members such as yourself, but I go to the same websites for news as everyone else - DT, TGD, IGN, CVG, and Google Tech news. This stuff comes up. I'm sorry your preconceived notions on Blu Ray and sony were blown to hell with this article, but don't shoot the messenger. I've been following blu ray and hd dvd for a long, long while now. I own both techs and enjoy them very much, as I'm sure many other OCNers here do. I'm not sorry you don't, so therefore, if you don't like it, don't read it, and then stop trolling.

Oh, and then build me a HTPC that does everything the PS3 does for $400. Then we'll see who has the real machine. But that would be off topic. This thread is on blu ray royalties, something you must have missed before posting.

Not everyone who wanted Sony to fail did so because of the PS3. We didn't all want them to fail because they "are on top" either.

There aren't many things in this world that annoy me more than stereotypes. I could say you are a blind fanboy. That doesn't make it true. Hell, there's a good chance you wanted Sony to win the format war because you genuinely liked Blu-Ray and considered it superior to HD-DVD. I don't know your motivation.

As I've stated in other threads, I have consistently had bad luck with Sony products. While I don't actively boycott everything Sony, I do try to buy non-Sony products whenever possible.

I did not want Sony to win because of this past history. Some people enjoy Sony products, but I have had better luck with other brands such as Philips, or even Toshiba.

I do not own an HD-DVD product, I don't even own an HDTV right now. The only thing in my whole house even remotely HD is the monitor I'm using, because it supports 1080p resolution, even though I only have my PC connected to it.

If that's enough to make me an HD fanboy who's just upset for losing the war in your mind, then so be it. I have my reasons for avoiding Sony, and fanboyism or a wish to see a powerful company fail has nothing to do with it.

Raven has acted like this before, and I'm going to presume that he will continue to do so in the future.

I found the article to be very informative and actually worthy of being posted as news compared to many others I see in this section that simply have no business being here (at the same time I do not blame newer members - we all deserve a little wiggle-room in the beginning).

Thank you for the news story Mike . Similar to others I believed that Sony held the majority of control and influence over Blu-Ray, but evidently they have just been the most aggressive in marketing.

see, your opinion right there, is exactly what i would expect..from someone mature and genuine in their interests with Sony and the electronic market.

i totally understand and respect your opinion. as i said part way through my rant, if someone honestly has a genuine reason for not like Sony, then what right do i have to hold that against you?

im no fanboy, i chose those products simply coz they are IMO the best on the market, and i enjoy every use for them. i havnt had a HEAP of Sony products in the past. but i have always had success with them. i dont see a point in picking sides really. i buy what i think is best.

i apologise if i offended you with what i said Mojo, you obviously dont fall into the group of people i was attacking before.

That article was not news to me personally, but I think it was a great post as a lot of people do miss the royalty dynamics relating to technology. Not only is there Blue-Ray royalty, but many pieces of the "IP" that make up the solution (and implementations) have royalty structures behind them.

having said that, a couple more points:
1) Every time company A pays a royalty X, this ends up costing their customer (another company or consumer) 2X to maintain 50 point margins. This margin is maintained throughout the supply chain, as each piece in the chain needs to make its margin.

2) Much of the BR licensing may not matter so much because I truly believe that digital distribution will reign supreme within the next 18-36mos. AppleTV is perhaps the most brazen attempt so far, but get ready for Netflix via your PS3. Xbox/PS3 have tried, but it really needs a heavy backer from the content side to make it work. I expect "subscription" based digital distribution within the next 18mos. Physical media for movies makes little sense going forward, and the physical transport HW to extract the bit-stream is also un-necessary. The decoding HW is still going to be key however.

The digital distribution model also better supports mobile applications. I buy/rent my movies using my TV remote and easily have the ability to watch them on my iTouch-like device. How would I do that if I had bought a BR disc? Its important to keep the average user in mind, not a PC geek who knows how to transcode bit-streams. Gotta love technology.

My guess on this is that satellite services such as Dish Network and DirecTV will use it as a springboard to gain a larger market share. They already have the bandwidth and can provide on-demand services, it's simply a matter of adding storage capacity and getting contracts with the movie producers.

I doubt that movies will drop considering the already 20ish dollar price point. For the shareholders its all a matter of getting some decent quality players at the sub 100 dollar point.
