i'm looking for a gfx card for my secondary rig (q6600, 2gb ram, xp, abit ab9 pro mb, pcp&c 610w psu with one 6 pin pci-e and one 8 pin) and i'm liking the new prices of the 3850 and 3870 cards. are the 3850 cards just slower clocked? can they be overclocked to 3870 speeds? i haven't looked into ati cards recently.

3870 for $180.00

But then again, 8800 GT for $200.00

If you've got one 6-pin and one 8-pin and want to go ATI, definitely check out the 3870X2. It will do that quad justice, for sure.

there is a 3870 on newegg for $183 and they are so close.

yeah i play when i want to play with someone else and i don't want to have to take out one of my 8800gtx's and put it in another system.

Really comes down to what size moniter the whole rig will be hooked up to. 1280 @ 60 frames should not be hard for any of the cards you listed (maybe the 3850). If you are going 1680 you will need to look at the GTS G92, GTX or 3870X2

Get a 3870 X2 for your primary rig, sell one of the GTXs, and put the other GTX in your back up rig.

Just a thought.

yeah i've thought about it, but i'm going to wait and see what the 9800GX2 and 9800GTX bring to the table before upgrading my main rig seeing as i already have a 780i board.

3870 does me fine in this rig, 180$ now, about 70$ cheaper than most 512MB GT's. So if you want a somewhat cheap and a card to max out cod4, go with it.

Well it comes down to this:
3850:
Pros:
- Insane OC Headroom
- Can be easily vcore modded via pencil mod
- VERY Cheap card
- Can be OCed to be faster than a 3870 (I did it with my bro's rig)

Cons:
- Crysis issues (only with videos, but i can tell ya how to fix it, if u get the 3850)
- Single slot cooler (can be a pro, but i consider it a con, since it decreases cooling performance)
- 256MB (There is a 512MB version, but the price is too close to a 3870 to be worth it)

3870:
Pros:
- Good OC headroom (after vmod and bios fix)
- Good stock cooler (with fan speeds turned up)
- Works like a charm right out of the box without OCing and all.
- Very silent at stock speeds
- Insane Price after the price drop
- Easily vModded just like the 3850
- 512MB GDDR4

Cons:
- A tad bit more than a 3850 in terms of price
- Cooler at max is quite loud

Basically, the 3850 can be OCed better than the 3870 for a lower price. At the same time, if you don't mind the noise of a 3870 @ full fan speed, u can OC the hell out of it and even beat the 8800GTS 512MB (my card comes VERY close).
