Amd or Intel for gaming... - Page 4

Off topic(sort of): Remember just a few years ago when AMD was wrecking Intel until the Dual Cores came out? I think about that every so often and it makes me kinda chuckle to see how the market has shifted.

Yeah tell me about it...and it will shift again at somepoint. Always does. Its always the same with any power struggle.

In about 2 years time we will be worshiping AMD and their amazing 5k-series ATI cards!

Although it doesn't look like Intel is stopping anytime soon, especially with the new 45nm chips.

Well, my E2180 did 3.0GHz but took 1.5v+ to be stable, not good for average air cooling. Also, I'm now using an E2200 @ the moment and only get to 3.2GHz on 1.5v with my Tuniq Tower 120.

I keep saying this over and over, but people don't seem to listen. The newer samples of the E2xxx series CPU's are NOT overclocking as well as they did in the start. Therefore, go with the E2160. They haven't sold as many samples and I've yet to see any E2160 that needed any where near 1.5v to attain 3.0GHz+. I think it's because there are more early samples of the E2160 still around, making them the best choice at this time.

If you get an E2160 expect 3.0GHz at least. You should be able to take it higher. Just use that as a baseline and anything above that is a bonus.

For the GPU, go with the 9600GT. It's got more memory than the 8800GS and should perform as good, if not better. They have it on the Egg for around 170-180 and even cheaper if you look in the Online Deals section. Great card at that money.

In terms of OCing it depends. I've seen around 3.0 on air cooling. The M0 stepping does a better job at OCing. Better to ask someone who owns one at the moment.

Also in terms of the GFX card, im sure the 3870 beats the GS in benchmarks, as its only a little behind the 8800gt.

EDIT; If you can, wait for the 9600gt. It looks like it performs on par with the 3870, but does much better when AA and AF is cranked up.
