Help backing up a Laptop HDD

Thread Starter
I have have a old 30GB laptop hard drive (that is in my laptop) that I need to backed up so that I can replace it with a 100GB HDD.

I have been trying to backup the 30GB HDD on to my desktop (as stated below) but when I try and copy all the files form the 30GB HDD to a file on my PC it takes for ever and it will not copy all the files.

Is there a program that I can download and run on my desktop to back up the laptop HDD. The laptop drive is pluged in using E-SATA. I just need to copy the hole hard drive to my desktop so that latter I can put them on and boot with the 100GB HDD that I am getting. I need to backup because I will be selling the 30GB to a bud of mine whos HDD died and will not be getting the 100GB HDD for a week or so. He needs the HDD ASAP.

Thanks

If you put all your files inside your C: Drive directly and no files on the desktop, you can still reach these files after replacing it. You can just open it like a regular external hard drive. You can also try zipping it before moving the file.

do you not have the permissions needed to copy the files over to your Vista system?

If that is the case, try the "Take Ownership" reg edit. it will give you a right click option to take ownership of any file so you can do with them as you want!

This by far the most useful tool I've used in Vista!

Thanks, it is my HDD, But it keeps blocking me. It doesn't ask for a Password or Username when I try and copy my files it just says that it can't

I will give the "take ownership" program a try. Thanks for the help.
