[IGN]Chris Taylor: Piracy Made Us Do It

IGN: There are a lot of RTS games being brought over to the console this year. Do you ever see the RTS being as big on the console as it is now on the PC?

Chris Taylor: Well one of the key things that is really affecting the economics and the success of gaming in general is piracy on the PC. So one of the reasons we'll see RTSs on the console is because people can't pirate it. That's why we're going to see a lot more of everything on the console. When you look at the sales of really hardcore games like Crysis and you think, "Wow, those games should have sold a lot more," you realize that's probably due in large part to piracy. And you realize that a game like Crysis would have done its true numbers if it had launched on console first.

It's just a good business decision to have your game of any kind on a console where you can't pirate it. When you start to refine the control system and you start to take away the barrier of the control system and you start to make that a non-issue, just like we did with first-person shooters, and it becomes more about the game experience and less about the interface, you start to go to the platform where the economics of where the gaming base is.

:swearing:

NOOO!!!

This gives a very good indication that both NVIDIA and ATi could move to consoles

Why does every bloody person think that it only exists on PC?

That's what I want to know. With a little research it's not all that hard to pirate console games, especially when they're on a disk. Yeah it's harder to pirate them than PC games, but far from impossible.

People haven't heard of mod chips
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modchip

imho, its a cheap tactics from developers and publishers. Lets blame everything on piracy, when its a)They are after one thing and one thing only the "benjamin franklins". Because, consoles are open to greater marketshare they generate greater revenue that is the sole reason.

they just need to make all games for all consoles and PC all the time and they'll stop crying about how much a game sold

for piracy, maybe it's a little easier on PC than console, that's why he look like a nood. with the pc, you know the right website and you can download the game and the crack in no time. the console you have to pay to mod it

Not this BS again? Wow, I guess they never heard that the idea was sort of debunked due to the PC Gaming Alliance that is formed, and they mentioned the PC users out their, and also the sales in terms of online distribution. It is just a poor excuse for any company to move and make more money with less effort. My evidence

Quote:
He offered up stats on the US and worldwide PC games market, saying the former (not including casual games) in 2007 generated $2.76bn revenue, a year-on-year rise of 12 per cent, accounted for 30 per cent of gaming revenues in the territory, and was set to make $9.6bn - a rise of 16 per cent - in 2008. For the global games market the figures were $8.3bn in 2007, up 14 per cent, with 2008 revenues set to be $9.6bn, up for 16 per cent.
