1 3870 is slower then 1 8800GT but 2 3870s is equal to 2 8800GTs. It all depends on the support of the games and drivers but considering 1 3870X2 got 26k in 3D06, I'll say that's pritty badass.

Look at the reviews and see how the games you play perform on the 2 cards and choose the one with the better performance.

Hmm, I wonder. You can get 8800GT for $185 each (MSI 512 mb version).

I've also seen the galaxy models for $190

thats $380. a pair of 8800gt in sli beat any bench or game test vs. a 3870x2 and at this price are cheaper.

Going back to 9600GT, they are a bit cheaper but the 8800gt is a better buy for slightly higher prices

Plus the guy has an SLI board, why not get sli? Cheaper and faster than the ATI solution

In synthetic benchmarks sure, but no way in games.
If benchmarking is what your into ATI is without a doubt what you want.

get the 9600gt sli,no point in going for a 3870x2 when you already have a sli mobo.
as far as crossfire scaling better than sli, maybe it scales better but still sli 8800gt beat 3870 CF and i think it would be the same with the 9600gt.

9600GT performs worse than the 8800GT (here). Based on that, I would say get the 3870x2. It can play every game out there on max settings, excluding Crysis (there should be a shorthand for that since it's said so often), and if you can always go crossfire in the future so it's not a dead end upgrade.
