I have been running Vista 64 Home Premium on all my home computers since day one and have had no problems. I think that most people that have ok machines and still have problems must have something to do with Upgrading to Vista from XP instead of doing a fresh install.
bought this comp with vista on it, has the Windows Vista sticker on it and everything.

Yea and when you need the ram Vista has to unallocate it, which takes time and causes some slowdowns. I couldn't play TF2 on my aunt's laptop (with 2GB of ram and an 8600M GT) because it kept gliching on me, I was getting 60+ fps but Vista kept having to unallocate the ram, because the prefetch kept taking up the space. After I disabled prefetch TF2 ran smoothly again. Free ram is a good thing, I would rather have ram when I need it then have it full of programs that I probably won't use that day! I mean, you wouldn't have a HDD at 99% full just because the space is there right?

The first thing I do when I touch Vista systems is disable the prefetching service.

And MS knows that Vista is a resource hog, which is why they are rebuilding their next OS from the ground up(again) and doing it right this time, with all of the same features and more, but with half the resource use.

Do you have any idea what your talking about?

It really doesn't take any time at all to deallocate memory.

Also it never uses much memory at all. On a 1gb system it will use 300 mb of RAM tops. On a 2 GB system it will use 1 gb tops, and lastly on a 4 gb system, it will use 1.5 gb tops.

Read the edit (I really have to check my posts before I hit submit)

And just as a comparison, my computer uses 1.2GB tops running Oblivion on max with visual enhancements.

Quit complaining. It takes NO time to unallocate memory, disabled superfetch makes vista worse so theres no point in doing that, and you have 2gigabytes of RAM. Use it. It takes no time to get rid of existing memory so as soon as you close the program taking up RAM it will make room for the new program. So you're not wasting anything.

I love these threads. I was dual booting vista and xp for months, and i NEVER encountered a problem with dual booting. (xp first, vista second). To be honest, vista ran smoother and better than xp did on my system. I recently reformatted and havent even bothered to put xp back on, vista all the way. I keep reading all these threads with problem after problem yet I havent really had any more problems than i did with xp. maybe i just got lucky, who knows.

I recently went back to Vista after a 6-7 month break. I tried Ultimate x64 during the middle of last year and I was not happy with it, so I went back to XP. When I built this new rig, I decided to give it another chance. I'm glad I did.

Vista is far from perfect, but every OS has its strong and weak points. I'd get faster FPS in XP than I do now, but I consider it a fair trade for the extra stability and security of Vista. I don't think Vista is really any better or worse overall than XP, just different. It happens to have the features I want, so I use it.

I haven't had a crash or compatibility issue since I installed it. It's true that I haven't been running it all that long, but I'm currently happy with the results. I can play all my games, my wife can do her graphics and spreadsheet work, and it's easy to switch between the 2. That is good enough for me.

For the record, this is a modern (but far from high end) system. My GPU is the equivalent of a 7600 or 1650 with DX10 thrown in, I only have 2 gigs of lightly OC'd RAM, and I'm using a dual core processor. My Vista index score is only 5.1. It's not the fastest rig by any means, but I have no problem doing anything I want to do with it.

Well there is one plus to Vista: with all of this extra memory usage the memory manufacturers dramatically increased their production, and when nobody went over to Vista they were forced to drop their prices, which is why we all enjoy the benefits of $40 2GB performance ram

And everything takes time in an operating system, if it took no time to unallocate or move memory around then we would all still be running DDR200 ram at 1-1-1-1 timings. Its not anything major like copying to a disk, but it causes stuttering. Maybe you don't notice it with your quad core, but on a 2GHz core 2 mobile processor it does matter.
