Zalman break = computer break?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, my zalman cpu cooler just broke or something. The spring that holds the fan to the whole thing seems to have let go of the fan and they wont stay on. When I try to start my computer up without it, it seems to get to the desktop then turns off, i think its already overheating. No overclocking has been done to the cpu. Anyway to fix both?

Well, I would need to see iot to see how to fix it. Try to use a paperclip or something to hold it on. I would also suggest not booting up without a fan

edit: try just placing a 120mm fan in front of it for now. As long as there is something moving the air through the cooling fins, it should be adeqyate to run stiock.

Booting up with a dead fan is fine. I saw no temperature changes on idle and a 2-3 C change on full load when my Thermalright V1 fan was unplugged.

Booting without a CPU cooler, on the other hand, is completely different and will kill your CPU.

I would say it completely depends on the cooler, CPU, case airflow, etc. I would never attempt it with my stock Intel cooler, for instance. Also each CPU set-up is different as well. As a general rule, I would advise against it before I advised it, IMO.

Hope that kinda helps

So leaving a non working fan on a cpu is better than none at all?

True that. But I wanted to point it out; it's not like your CPU would totally burn up.

I wouldn't run your computer without a CPU fan working on the CPU. Get a replacement as soon as possible. I do not know Zalman though.. can't help there.
