He said the kids are getting XP. His real question is what to get for himself. (even though the thread title is misleading)

Nah, using a less-known OS would expand their computer knowledge. It's not like it's hard to "learn" windows. But it's hard to learn something new when windows becomes a crutch (notice how people never want to leave it and its "ease of use?")

Anyway, just a money-saving suggestion

Going vista is the future like it or not. All problems can be solved (I've yet to encounter a single problem with my vista OS).

If you want to buy another operating system in a year and a half go with XP. Sorry to be blunt, but it would be ignorant to not go with vista. Good luck nonetheless....

Reasons, friend, reasons. You made some statements, but this is not a reason; this is not a "why." "Why" is the only real source of power; without it, you are powerless.

So, what significant changes are present in vista that justify upgrading to vista?

PS: if you're getting a NEW OS for a NEW computer, then get vista. If you're asking if you should upgrade, just keep XP.

I've moved to Vista x64 and I've had no problems so far with drivers, instability or slow downs.

I've been reluctant to change, but I think now the time is right. The same happened with XP. I stuck to Windows 2000 until XP had matured a bit after a year or so.

Vista. Do you want to play in Directx9c or Directx10/.1?

Thread Starter
Looks like it is Vista. I may give it to them, I will talk to the 11 year old and explain that it may have problems every now and then and let him choose.

They want it for games mostly, so it will have to be Windows.

Thanks for the replies all
