Sigh... Here goes again:

Less shader processors = less money to make = cheaper card money wise. But if you can optimize your bus, architecture and memory bandwidth to push as much as you can out it's rear end, then you can equal the performace of a higher card for less money, AND less power usuage. In the video card world, memory bandwidth is everything. This link may give you some idea:

Source

Hope you spot the trend....

If your younger and don't get it, I'll give ya an analogy:
A Car with 8 cylinders and a Car with only 6 decide to race. Which do you think would win?

The one with the most horsepower and torque wins. Cylinders doesn't mean anything. Memory bandwidth is exactly that. Horsepower and torque. It's not something the videocard industry likes to talk about because for one, it's a weakness. People focus on 'oh the GPU is clocked at 3Ghz!! I'm gonna buy that FTW!' It's a selling point. Most (and obviously some here) have no clue what memory bandwidth is, or what it's used for... so why bother advertising it? Even my grandma knows how fast her CPU is though... THATS what their gonna focus on.
And thats exactly what the industry wants. Which is the stupidest thing someone could do. (without obviously checking the "horsepower" first)

Ignorance is bliss..

Well said and you're correct. You need to look at the card's performance as a whole, not specifically individual components. Its like those GPUs that have 1GB of VRAM, yet the card can't really utilise it fully.

i was talking about the model number (HD 4XXX) instead of having an HD 3900 or something

I pretty much stopped beleiving in AMD/ATI after phenom and 3870. Sure they're priced low but so is an 8800GT and Q6600.

if you had read the article you would have probably come across this...
Quote:
The number of TMUs have finally been increased, actually doubled, to 32 with RV770, while RV740 sports 24 TMUs, and the low-end RV710 has 8 TMUs. Don't bother getting upset with the 256-bit memory bus because it will not become any kind of bottleneck. The only time it might be even close to that is when you're pouring liquid nitrogen into the container and have the GPU running at +50% of stock frequency, which will happen though.
if memory bandwidth meant everything in the video card world why,oh why would 2900xt languish behind when it is capable to push out the most through its rear end and has the biggest hole of them all.
either they are trying to fool me or you are the ignorant idiot who keeps talking out of his rear end.

3870 specs review
it shows why having more TMUs may help the r770 rather than having a GDDR5 fuelled bandwidth.

A Little Knowledge can be a Dangerous Thing...

Even though im not a nvidia fan, ill tell u straight to the face: YOUR WRONG.
GX2 = Dual GPU card by nvidia. This will replace the 8800 Ultra
GTX = SINGLE GPU card, and replaces the 8800GTX

and where the hell is the proof of the so called "GTX" being 100% better than the ultra. It's funny, cause the GX2 is better than GTX, but ure saying GTX is beating the 8800Ultra by 100%. Go figure.

Um, sorry but the 9800Gx2 is a stop gap and it's just two G92 8800Gt's duct taped together. The 9800GTX is a newer core and will be more powerful than the 9800Gx2.

It could go either way. You have no proof it will be slower then or faster then the GX2.

You're exactly right. Baring some radical driver optimizations for SLI though it will be faster.
