All diagnostics and joking aside, the one thing the offer that really irks me is charging $70 to install memory modules. Not to check the timings, make sure they're in dual-channel, etc, just the install. 3-5minutes of taking off the side, snapping them in, and closing it up for $70 plus tax. Why the hell am I going to law school to earn $250-$400 an hour if I can install memory on computers for $420/hr (assuming I'm lazy and do only 6 computers an hour)?

If my computer breaks, I just post here....

Well, I used to. I've been here so long and have read so many thousands of posts, that I actually have clue. Then, word got out....Now I get calls from my in-laws, siblings, madre, etc at least once every couple of weeks with [insert problem here].

Suddenly, I'm the family IT support.

To DeltaEpsilon: No, you make $6.25, the salary they pay those guys; the STORE pockets $413 and change.

Ditto.

Nice read, shinji2k.

There have been occasions of overheard sales conversations at BB that almost send me into a fit of blood-haze and rage.

One word: Thieves.

Note: Not all of them, and not all the time. sometimes I hear good information and helpful store employees.

But NuclearCrap, I wouldnt say that. Because the guy in there with his A+ will know more about actual repair .
but if that was the case, they would have to pay geeksquad a lot more money and the number of a+ certified people isn't that easy to come by for a low wage position like geeksquad as oppose to a company who will pay you about 60,000 and up a year. geeksquad is based on hourly wage so if you were smart enough to get A+ you are not dumb enough to work at geeksquad or firedog(ghey name) and the likes.

It's not surprising if you ask me. I worked for an internet company, the company SUCKS but to make up for it they had great tech support. All of us techs were pretty damn good and every day we repaired more than most of these crap "repair" shops over the phone, and half the time had to fix people's computers after they brought them back from the damn geek squad who always managed to make things worse. Luckily they had our free support to save them money

The company moved out of state, so all us techies were forced to find jobs. I applied at the geek squad and so did a few other people (most actually moved on to better jobs, lucky them), and did those of us that applied so much as get a call?? Nope. One of the guys I worked with said he used to know someone that worked at the geek squad, and apparently it's just a group of friends that get each other hired. They are all dumb as a rock and know nothing about computers, but it's as simple of having a friend there, they don't care about you actually knowing what you are doing.

Meanwhile I am looking for a job and repairing friend's computers for free almost daily, while these geniuses can't fix a stupid BIOS setting. Lovely

Given what I do for a living, (fixing PCB boards in phones, most other electronics aren't much different. replace a capacitor here, resolder this etc...) And not being a computer noob, I've never had to take a PC in for repairs.

But out of those three, Microcenter would be my choice if needed. There is one nearby (sorta, 40 minute drive in Mayfield Ohio) but it's huge. It's like a K-mart but instead of crap, they sell computer stuff.
Since thats all they sell, I'm sure their techs would be a bit more knowledgable regarding PC's.

I'm actually a fan of microcenter. Their prices are competitive with newegg (being a brick and mortor store, thats quite a feat) and their clearence items usually on display in the middle of isles can be insanely marked down. CompUSA on the other hand price gouges like no other... theres one not 20 mins away, but I still drive to microcenter...
It's like shopping at a brick and morter newegg!
