The problem I have with people defending these companies saying, "its just a random bad tech, not representative of the all the techs", is that every time someone tests these guys, they fail. Every single time. Either its sheer dumb luck, or the majority of the techs are n00bs; in which case, its not just a few bad apples. Instead, there are only a few good apples.

Frankly for a company to have even one in every 10 tech be hopelessly incompetent is unacceptable. And it would appear that the number is much greater at these stores.

I'm a Firedog tech part time while I am still in school. There are some people who know what they are doing, but for the most part CC and BB are more focused on sales then they are on actually fixing the problem.

If a problem takes more than 5 minutes of my time I will charge for the appropriate service, but in a situation like the one in the story, it should have been fixed before he even left the store if we were not too busy.

Granted there are many variables to the situation, but overall this report is not surprising.

This infuriates me. Just like when my friends buy computers and don't ask me what I think first. Note: They know nothing when it comes to hardware...

You think Geek Squad is bad?

You should check out PC World's "The Tech Guys".

Please stop the Memory and Turbocharger analogies, make them stop!!

Most of those people are arrogant noobs, but once in while you might find a good guy but like the other guy mentioned, they don't last long if they give out free advice.

I don't know why they picked that to test them......I mean any noob can figure that out. I guess if they couldn't then that would show FOR SURE that they should get some training.

I completely agree with that statement, which is why ive come to loathe circuit city. I work at a store in texas and we're number 5 or 6 in sales numbers and thats all they push us to do. "Sell more cheese, sell more installs, why did you sell that computer dry?" UGH, i HATE that. Me being a firedog, its hard for me to lie to people telling them we NEED to set their computer up or they'll screw it up for 130 bucks. Sure i'll sell the warranty cuz people get clumsy w/ it, but even then our warranty people suck and screw up our work orders and we have to fix it which causes more problems for us and takes up more of our time. The management also expects us to help people when they screw up the schedule and only ONE person is in technology, even if we have 6 or 7 computers to do by that day. Oh yea, and ive been there a year and havent gotten a raise, just because i havent sold a lot of installs. I'm a computer repair/maintenance guy, why should i be selling in the first place? Pay me more and i will, but until then, screw that, i have other things to do.
