It's funny when people come in the store and ask if I do sidework because they don't want to pay the ridiculously high charges for stupid things. I usually tell them no, but word gets around from family/friends and I usually end up getting phone calls. I tell them that I'll charge half of what CC or BB would charge.

I still make out very well.

I work privately as well as holding a full time job and I don't have any insurance. As long as you are careful I don't see a problem. If there is a situation where something could go wrong I will make fully sure with the client that they are 100% on the facts.

As for the OP. Should take a couple of minutes to diagnose, fix and test and a minimal fee. If my jobs only take me 5mins I don't charge a full hour, but then again I am not relying on my private fees paying for my house and car.

Before I even read the article I practically knew this was going to be a nightmare....

I've fixed my boss' computer, work computer, sister's computer, etc. - and all I charge is a hot meal and/or a few beers.

I think some places might need to work on their hiring process.

EDIT: Okay, I did get paid for the work computer, but that took quite a while ;-)

In defense of some of these places, FD and GS are only allowed to use approved software to fix computers. The approved software does not do a good job and thus the end result is a not so terrific job.

I've gone the way of trying to please the customer by actually using software/tools that work and are proven. If helping a customer while using non-certified software costs me my job then so be it, but I'll guarantee that CC has just lost a large clientele of customers due to the fact those customers keep coming back for my services at the store and no one elses.

thanks yeah we charge $60 for the first hour and $45 for every hour after that, but that's much cheaper than most places around here and we usually fix the computer that same day instead of a week or two.

that hurts, i do tech work part time at staples.
there are some people who know what they are doing, others who dont, and when i hear of people not being able to diagnose a problem like a ide cable not being plugged in it hurts and makes me wonder how they got that job in the first place.

and i agree with the legend, i will use software that i know can get the job done instead of the few programs that we are supposed to be using that just cant get the same thing done.
