CPU/Memory Ratio

Well, as some of you know I recently built new system, parts list in the sig.

I just realized the RAM I got is way overkill. Pretty much can support 4,500MHz (500 * 9) 1:1 ratio. However, is it beneficial to run higher memory FSB than CPU? I set E8400 to 350 * 9 now and put memory 1:1 at 5-5-5-13 2T. I can up the memory much more, but I always thought 1:1 is best.

Any insight on this?

the 1:1 ratio is overrated in my opinion, at least with the intels. o/c the cpu and then o/c the ram. everyone has their own theory on this. i dont believe that a 1:1 ratio is the best settings in every setup. most of the time, my rigs will run better when i dont use the 1:1 ratio. like i stated earlier, first o/c your cpu, then go and see how far you can o/c your ram. you can also try different settings to see what works better for you.

1:1 provides no benefit. Run the ram as fast as reliably and stably as possible.

1:1 is best in theory
450FSB:450 MHz RAM
one thing 1:1 is put less stress on the chipset

1:1 is a lot easier to calculate for the chipset than some 2:3 which is

450FSB:Too lazy to do in my or use calculator

see what I mean...

1:1 in theory will provide better performance and least chipset stresss

but when using weird rations that make the ram 550 MHz + since the ram is so high Mhz it will perform better

but that require good overclocking ram

one setting that matters more than ram and fsb:dram is chipset latency the TRD setting

Higher memory speeds will of course put more strain on the chipset, but less of a strain than raising FSB, and 1:1 is by no means better for performance, in theory, or in practice.

The higher the memory runs relative to FSB, the lower tRD can be, and tRD is one of the single largest factors when determining overall memory latency.

Anandtech has a really good article on the clock crossing procedure and how these things are calculated (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3208&p=5).

There is no reason not to run the memory as fast as you can. Sure FSB is still a more important factor, but FSB often hits it's limit well before the memory does. I cannot go much past 400MHz FSB with my CPU, but my memory can certainly run at more than 400MHz, so there is exactly zero reason for me to use a 1:1 ratio, as it's slower in every conceivable way.

The only chipset I've used that ever had an actual penalty for non 1:1 ratios is the NForce 2.
