E8400 Upgrade

Thread Starter
I'm awaiting some bursary money next month, so of course I'm spending it on upgrading my computer (the one in my sig)

I have the following three upgrades in mind:

1. Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
2. ASUS P5K P35
3. OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-8000 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1000 CL5-5-5-18

My first question to you folks is, will my power supply do the job?
Second, should I consider components other than the ones I have chosen?
Any help is appreciated as always

Your OCZ 520w has 33A on 12 rails so should be fine. You also take a look at this ram.

Thanks for the reply.
I chose those OCZ because the IC FAQ indicated that they used MicronD9GMH or MicronD9GKX ICs. They're also binned @ DDR2-1000 while the G. Skill PK are DDR2-800 and use Elpida or ProMOS ICs. That's pretty much how I chose those, based on the FAQ. I could be wrong though, do you have experience with either, or both?

Correct. That OCZ is Micron chip.
Are you sure that OCZ is a micron chip? (Not to step on your toes, linskingdom )

I was told on the OCZ forums that those use the same chips as the ReaperX PC28000 Model which are Powerchip. (post by Tony at the bottom of the page: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=34275)

The 1GB Dimms use the Microns (according to ramlist http://ramlist.ath.cx/) but apparently these dimms are the same as the ReaperX but with the regular heatspreaders.

So don't choose them based on that. I haven't seen any 2x2 1000MHz kits with Micron chips.

Step on my toes? Not all. zlojack. I can be wrong but I did have an OCZ 2x2 kit that states to use micron chip.

Maybe it's the PC26400 ones that are still Micron while the PC28000 ones (judging from this list and other info I've seen) seem to be Powerchips or others.

I've been reading up and digging a lot on RAM lately, since I've been through the ReaperX, Platinum XTC and now the Mushkin Redlines (all PC28000 1000MHz) in the last couple of months.

I've sold off both sets of OCZ and got the Mushkins after seeing the great results they were getting, but so far they don't seem to want to do anything more than the others...

Anyway, to the OP, those G.Skill ones or the Mushkins like mine (I think they have a MIR in Canada right now!) would both be pretty sweet.

I'm tempted to pick up a second set and just rename my PC "The Overkill Monster"

Don't see alot on the P5K

I'd say get a Abit P35 or a Gigabyte DS3 (DS3R if you plan to raid)

I'd be more worried about stepping on the Lion's tail rather than his toes.

Good luck with the upgrade
