low sound volume in vista

my friend just built a new rig with a Creative X-Fi Fatality and the sound is way low. he has all the volumes up all the way, and he has the newest driver. any ideas?

did you adjust it in the control panel under sound>playback tab> speakers and then properties> then i should be under levels

Dont mean to make you feel stupid but have you ckecked that all the jacks are firmly plugged in the right places and do fatality X-Fi require a floppy power connection.
