really odd spikes (never happened before 'til now)

Thread Starter
my E6600 @ 3.0 idles around 50 - 54ish, but coretemp is making it spike up into the 67+ range every now and then and then it immediately goes back down to 54ish in under a second... that isn't even possible is it? what's going on? It's never done this before until now, I'm not even running anything besides firefox winamp and AIM...

EDIT: It appears that it stopped after I shut down for 10~15 minutes... was this coretemp's fault? Perhaps a misread?

Uh, idling at near your thermal limit is not a good idea...what cooler do you have installed? Have you tried to re-install it to make sure it's got good contact?

It's been that way for months now, it never goes above 63... and that's entirely irrelevant to what I was asking about.

And I have a Zalman CNPS9500 AT

To me it sounds like something is being accessed or taking up CPU cycles. Have you checked for spyware/adware/viruses to be sure? How many processes are running when you open up the Task Manager?
