2900xt temps - Page 4

"clean your heatsink - thats probably the issue -...."

I do not rule out the heatsink guess. But if so, then it would
be logical to expect an elevated idle temperature. He is not
seeing this.

Sure, go out and buy an after-market cooler. My 2900 fans
sound like lawnmowers at anything above 40%. For that reason
alone I will mod the cooling.

But it does this Forum little credit for its senior supertechs
with all their polished merit badges and popularity points to
sit back and just guess. How about some systematic
trouble-shooting? In my world getting it right is valued more
than just shouting out the first answer.

You know, I actually read the TOS then went back and
skimmed thru it again to make sure I had not missed it.
As far as I can tell the inclusion of FACTS is not unauthorized.
But it is becoming increasingly clear to me why many
have concluded otherwise.

It's normal for GPU's to get that hot. I wouldnt worry about it. CPU's on the other hand should never be that high.

Anyone know where there is a good online tutorial for removing the heatsink/fan for the 2900XT?

Just undo all the screws, not that hard. There are 1 or 2 screws in the PCI slot grill that you have to remove.

I did that, but them something seemed to be holding it on. I didn't want to force it. Should it just fall off?

What have you taken off so far? The red plastic cover should come off easily. Then, you have to unscrew the fan and black plate.

Try taking a hair-dryer to it. The thermal pads sometimes fuse themselves to the hardware, don't force anything. The heat should loosen things a bit.

I'll give that a shot. I just don't want to break something. Maybe I'll take it off after running Crysis for an hour. That'll get things nice and warm. HAHA
