Wasting WUs

post #1 of 17
Thread Starter
I noticed that when running the smp client, if i close it and change my cpu clock it will damage my work or it will not be able to send the wu's anymore, so i loose my work; sometimes it acts like it's freezed up so i have to restart the smp client many times until it says file IO_ERROR and deletes my current wu

all i learned by this is that it isn't a good idea to stop your client when it's running and change your cpu clocks, otherwise your wu's will get screwed up;

I was wondering is this happens to you too guys, or if there's a way to recover the wu's and avoid them to be deleted.

I have tried to backup the work folder, where the WU is located, and then change my clock speed, but that ends up getting the WU deleted too.

I learned that it is best to wait until the WU is finished, successfully sent to Stanford, then change clock speed. That works best for me.

I figured out a way to save your work in SMP. I have tried this with WU's at 60% and even to make sure that it worked, I tried it at 92% last night.

Open the SMP window while it is folding and scroll to the bottom of the text. Right click to bring up the options window and select "mark."

Make sure that the cursor is blinking right below the last line of text and hit your "x" key.

I usually hit it twice to be safe before I close the window. You can then restart your SMP client and it should reload your WU.

This has worked several times for me and I'm confident it will continue to work. I have searched this forum for how to fix the issue of loosing WU's and Retrospekt finally led me in the right direction. Hope this helps some of you with this frustrating problem.

Bump for the sleepy heads that are now awake...

Someone please check to validate that this works on your SMP clients.

I routinely back up my /work folders and I haven't had a problem with deleted W/Us.

I actually created two batch files for the process. One batch file copies all the files in the /work folder to a /workbackup folder. I run that before I shut down the client. I then shut down the client, and do whatever I need to do. The other batch file deletes everything in the /work folder, then copies the contents of the /workbackup folder back to the /work folder. I then start the client back up. I have never had a work unit be deleted using this method.

Are you running two clients on the same machine? If so, did you set their config to different machine #s, install them into different folders, and use the -local flag?

I'm running SMP client on my Desktop PC and on my laptop, and they are both connected to my dsl router; I set the ID machine config blank on both pc's, do you think there might be a conflict between them? Also i nvr heard of the -local flag, where do i have to put it? My "work" folder has still the completed wu inside of it but wasn't able to send it, so it just download another one and is working on it now, is there a way to manually send it (otherwise it would be another 13 hrs waste of time)?
