My Asus Striker II 780i

Thread Starter
Just got it all hooked up and everything is working dandy

Except for 4x 1GB Dimms, it refuses to post with 4x Dimms installed. Although it did first boot but promptly froze in the Bios. I put the Vdimm to 2.0v as rated and still no post with 4x Dimms. The board came with Bios 0902. Any ideas? Cos i'm completely lost in the Bios. I have never seen so much voltage tweaking!

On a high note: OCZ Reapers are designed to run @ 4-3-3-15 when used with a 680i chipset, with the 780i these timings are still detected fine

I would try each memory stick individually or in pairs. This will allow you to diagnose if it is a slot that is faulty, also might try loosening the timings to get it to post. just a couple ideas to get you started.

i had no issue with 4 dimms, i had a old bios and just recently flashed to 0902. hum what does your debug say? mine wouldnt post when i tried clocking over 1200 right now im at 1080 with tight timing 4-4-4-12

your not clocking anything yet are you? clear CMOS, and let it set its own timing then try the tweaks

mine set my ram at 5-6-6-15 and down clocked my CPU to 2.66 now its clocked and stable with a heavy dose of V ever where

Run 2 of them so that they are not in dual channel and see what happens.

Similar thing happened to a friend of mine, and Asus released a BIOS fix a few days later, fixing the dual channel issue.

I love th Asus BIOS, odd going from Asus to some other ones, I just go "wait, where is everything????".

Make sure you set the RAM to "unlinked", and test the RAM at its stock, or slightly higher than stock, and try to get 1T stabilized. Lots of bandwidth, Nvidia chipsets love medium frequencies, low timings, and 1T.

If you're talking about Vista x64 there is a known issue with trying to install the OS with more than 3GB installed with a RAID controller enabled...or maybe it was when SLI was enabled. Either way...

Pull two of the dimms out, install the os and download the patch (below) and then put the other two dimms in and fire her back up...

(KB929777)
Brief Description:
Install this update to address an issue in storport.sys which results in a system crash when certain hardware configurations exist.

(KB945149)
Brief Description:
Install this update to improve the graphics performance for multiple Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) scenarios on a system running Windows Vista.

I had that board before it started failing to POST and got a 780i from EVGA. You need to only have TWO dimms in, and in slots A2 and B2. A1 and B1 have issues that have not been resolved. Go to www.asus.com and view the forums on that board for some hilarity.

Thanks for your info fellas....aint had a chance to resolve the ram thing yet as i have been doing other things. But i will look into this in a moment.

Currently only using XP 32 at the moment, and i have been getting occasional BSODS "IRQ not less or equal than" just sitting on the desktop doing nothing half the time.

I'm starting to think, even though this board is detecting the 4-3-3-15 timings that these dimms can run at on a 680i, isn't supported on the 780i. We shall see...

giga - the issue I was referring to only applies to x64 bit...however if you're going to have 4GB of memory in there and have an 8800 GTX or Ultra, you're going to want to use x64 or you're going to hit the soft limit on memory available to the 32bit operating system.

(nutshell)
Video Card RAM is memory mapped to the system at boot time, so, even though the physical limit of an 32bit operating system is 4GB of ram, whatever ram is in your video cards will be subtracted from that amount within the operating system.

Frx: I have two 8800 GTX each with 768MB of ram. That's 1.5 GB of ram on the video cards, and I have 4GB of DDR2 800Mhz. Within Vista 32bit, the OS will only be able to recognize 2.5 GB of that memory because the 1.5GB within the video cards is memory mapped...
