Military Deployment = Time to upgrade

Thread Starter
I'm currently deployed and am now lucky enough to be able to get internet access ever so often. My rig has been sitting at home for the past 6 + months now barely used. I'm allegedly coming back home sometime in the next 1-45 days. So naturally its time to upgrade my stale rig So far I've upgraded my case to a TT Kandalf LCS, and upgraded my monitor to an LG 22" widescreen. Now I'm looking into the video cards, so far I'm almost certainly going to buy an EVGA 8800GTS (g92), but I wanted your guys' opinion on waiting for a new 9800 series card or going through with the new 8800GT. Basically I don't want to spend more than $320 because I still need a few other components upgraded. Thanks in advance.

If your budget is around ~$350 then the best option is the 8800GTS (G92). The 9800 series is almost guaranteed to be more expensive.

The GTS is a good card and you wont be disappointed.

Wait until you're physically back in the states. 45 days can be an eternity when it comes to computers

Well some more RAM is a definite. 1Gb just doesnt cut it, I havn't had 1Gb ram since my old Athlon XP

the new 8800GTS is probably most worth it at the moment... but if you get that its worth upgrading your CPU, mobo and ram to get the most from it.

Yeah that right, 45 days is a lot and who know maybe the 98xx series will be out by then. Then you can compare both the 8800GTS G92 and the 98xx. That will give you more time to do a little research and buying the right components for your rig

I think G92 8800GTS is the best bet for that money. The only problem I see is your cpu, it is most likely that your rig won't be able to take full advantage of lates GPU such as 8800GT/GTS if it can't run at 3.0G abd above.

Maybe somethings like this.

E2180 OEM $60
Gigabyte P31 $66
8800GT $200
2GB Ballistix 667 (good OC) $19

Or get 5000+BE if your board supports it.

That is also on the list, thinking of an OCZ 2g DDR2800 pair.

First off, Thank You for all you and the rest of our military people do

Keep an eye on the On Line Deals section
As said, the video card market is quickly changing, again. So for now, its hard to give advise on that one.
