Video card question, Heat ,OC

Alright, so my video card runs pretty hot. I guess the all do. it is easily the biggest heat generator in my case. I believe it idles a bit over 50 c and im not sure where it peaks out but i believe its over 63 c. This may be normal for video cards i dunno but id like to cool it better.

If i were to use a zalman vf1000 or something like that and it made a dramatic difference. I could probably do some OC,ing to the card and maybe end up in a temp range a little bit below what i have now but overclocked. Make sense? I dont know that much about ocing video cards but , if i understand correctly then there are 3 clocks.

The other thing i wanted to ask quick was this. Befre i built this rig i had a 6800xt(nvidia) and i was using some program to oc it and adjust the fan speed. i dont remember what i was using anyone know. I thought it was the nvidia intall then add the ntune but . that that either is different now or it wasnt the program i used.

Maybe ill just get the aftermarket cooler and not even oc it, it works fine for me now but i dont run everything maxxed just to take it easy on the card. However when i do it creates alot of heat in the case so id rather not. what do you guys think alot of you guys replace the vga coolers? How hot do your cards run? Thanks

My 8600 GTS idles at 42c and peaks at 57c with a slight overclock. But it's an Asus with a somewhat different cooler than the reference.

I have used my zalman vf900 on my old 7900gt and my new 8800gt. The 7900gt was volt modded to 1.55 and it kept that card cool enough to use(just under 70 full load). I just ran the ati tool cube for 5 mins and my 8800gt got to 59 degrees. If you start oc'n/volt modding the gpu, my cards have worked completely stable as long as I kept them under 70 degrees full load. After they went above 70, games would lock up/glitch and stuff. The program to overclock/change fan speeds is rivatuner.

Edit: I forgot my 8800gt idle atm is 36.

I have the same card. The temps are normal. Mine go over that that on a load and mine is well cooled. Not much to worry about in my opinion.

If you want to see the max temp your video card will generate, try using ATItool .27 and run the 3D "Cube" stress test. It will typically stress your video card beyond what any game/application will do.

You can adjust your video card's fan speed using Rivatuner. You can also adjust the clockspeeds with this program (among other things).

What has been recommended to me by others, is to adjust the speeds in RivaTuner and test in ATItool. It seems the speeds are set more accurately in Riva, and you can also adjust your shader speeds.

As for temps, I've heard that any 8600/8800 series cards are usually safe below 90C, but I think 80C or below sounds more reasonable IMO.
