Tired of the ATIKMDAG Crash? Look no further *Solution*

Hey, well I figured I would pass on some information on how to alleviate this dreaded driver crash, especially for the hd3870x2's! It's more of a work around than anything, but if you want to fully fix the issue you can flash your card. I chose this method instead as its just as easy and you keep all the functionality of the power saving features for later use without having to reflash.

SO if all of you are like me everything works fine and dandy on the desktop in Vista and XP, but OMG! crank up a game for 5 minutes and all haities breaks loose with sound looping and restarting. In Vista however, it will at least crash to the desktop with a driver message stating ATIKMDAG stopped responding.

what to do you ask? How can I play my games?

here it is..

Download the latest Rivatuner 2.06 which I have included

Also download the configuration file and place it in the rivatuner installation folder under c:\\Programs\\Rivatuner which I have included within the rivatuner zip folder.

Follow the instructions from here:

Open up rivatuner and select your card/monitor (should be first on the list) and select the arrow. You need to click the graphics card icon

now enable overclocking. I just use the stock speeds unless I bench. You can apply at windows startup if you want, however if you do not you'll need to re-enable this before every gaming session.

What this does is that it overclocks the 2nd core which runs at 300mhz initially. This prevents the power saving feature from enabling on the card and keeps your game from crashing.

Also a note - Keep in mind this ONLY overclocks the 2nd core so if you want greater than 825/900 you'll need to use amdgpu clock tool to be able to overclock core 1 and 2.

For all of those that keep banging their heads on why their games are crashing I hope it brings as much bliss as this workaround did for me!

Untested in XP but it SHOULD work.
