Whatever you do, make sure you get a distro that's actually meant to be used on Flash USB drives. Using a main distro on a USB drive is going to suck horrendous balls; I've tried it (not the sucking horrendous balls part.) I tried DSL once, and it was kinda hard to use. It wasn't like one of the mainstream distros.

Drivers are always touch and go, and chances are you will get 90% of them when you boot. Worst comes to worst, you add the module for the drivers you need.

It has a related browser, but Firefox can be added, a nice thing about the modules. As for MSN, it has an IM client built in that might support MSN.

Try burning a CD of it first maybe, then just fire it up then if you like it, install it and dual boot.

The really nice thing about Slax is that you can boot, and select it to store the entire OS in RAM, and remove the USB drive or CD. Perfect if you want to watch a DVD on a laptop with one drive, or just want to boot a friend into it without leaving your thumb drive for the hacking.

Why not get a bigger thumb drive? 1GB is ~ $8 @ your local office depot

Then, you can save "bling" or appearance settings, performance settings, etc. using SimpleConf. Why not boot OCNix off it?

I assume you're talking about Kopete? Yep, it does support MSN, as well as AIM, Yahoo, Google Talk, and pretty much anything else. I personally prefer Pidgin though. Link is in my sig .
