SATA vs SATAII?

I see these two terms being thrown around everywhere. I always thought they were the same thing? Are they? What's the difference?

SATA (or SATA I) is the first revision and SATA II is the second revision. SATA I has a max of 150 Megabyte/s and SATA II has a max of 300 Megabyte/s.

Everyone seems to think that it's 1500 Megabyte/s and 3000 Megabyte/s, but it's 1500Megabit/s and 3000 Megabit/s. 1 Megabit is about 10 Megabytes. 3000 Megabits divided by 10 is 300 Megabytes.

bandwidth is the difference. It's like USB vs. USB 2.0, except the advantage to SATAII is much more dubious. I Think it's like 150 MB/s vs 300 MB/s

Just note that, SATAII usually never uses its full 300MB/s potential.
It usually uses an average of 250-260, I use 254.

So Seagate says my HDD listed in my sig rig runs at 3.0Gb/s (they use a small "b", but this means bits right, not bytes?), and I've removed the jumper on the back of the drive that limits it to 1.5Gb/s speeds, and yet Windows hardware manager says it's still running at only 1.5Gb/s. Emails to Seagate have gone unanswered. How can I tell at what speed my HDD is actually transferring data?

150Mbyte/s and 300Mbyte/s is saying how much the SATA ports can move, it doesn't specify what the data in/out of your HDD is.

Ok, so there is any way to determine the data in/out as you mention? Is it just me or is this whole SATA HDD thing a tad bit misleading?

How is it misleading? It allows you to have a HDD or a RAID of HDDs that uses up to 300Mbytes/s.

Try HDTach. It's a HDD benchmarking program.

not to thread-jack, but is there a big performance increase between sata1 and sata2?

@ herc: just remember that sata2 is faster than sata1
