8800GTS 512MB temps not reading properly in HWMonitor

I had this problem the other day and thought nothing of it. I had left HWMonitor running while playing a game (COD4 I think) so I could see what my max temps were. I came out of the game and the GPU max was 56C like it always is. But then after doing a few things like surfing OCnet, I looked back and the max GPU temp was around 300C! Obviously the temp never reached that, but why is it reading the temp wrong?

I am running ATI Tool artifact scan and it has been running for 82 minutes. At roughly the 60 minute mark (Where I took this screen shot) I noticed the max GPU temp to be as shown in the pic. What the heck? Is this an HWMonitor problem or a hardware problem, or a video card problem? What's going on? Should I be alarmed?

Try GPU-z to check your Temps

Wow, in that case, GPU-Z is 8C off from everything else I have checking my GPU temp right now. It reads 40C while Riva, ATI-Tool, and HWMonitor all read 48C and fluctuate in harmony.
