I wouldnt advise trying it out just yet.. Who knows what that missing pin does, it could fry the chip, or destroy some other hardware. Ive personally used the mechanical pencil trick, it works really well. Make sure to use a .5mm pencil, those work best.
Ive heard of people putting the broken off pin into the socket, then putting the chip inand having it work fine, but Id be very careful about putting it in without the pin it needs.
