SPD/IF on X-Fi Fatality?

Thread Starter
So who's running a TOSlink cable to this card? I guess I'll have to buy some sort of IO panel, as the digital 3.5mm jack shares with the mic port.......
I'll have to debate between the sound quality improvement with my DVR with SPD/IF versus the PC with SPD/IF
Anyhow, is there much of a noticed improvement in sound quality over the standard direct 5.1?

Oh I forgot to mention that I'm running Z5500s.

How's that? I thought it could.......why would the fatality not be able to output it in digital?

Huh well I didn't know that.....I guess it's all good if it sounds good though. I use my PC for movies and music too......so I think the tradeoff would be worth it.

it will only output 5.1 in movies if you are using PowerDVD. These movies need to have dolby or DTS sound since creative has disabled hardware dolby/dts decoding. This means that it will only output 5.1 from these movies running in Powerdvd. if you have avi movies with 2-channel sound, it will only output them in 2-channel, and same for music. The Auzentech prelude is the only x-fi that can output 5.1 from a 2-channel source because it supports dolby digital live with is a real-time dolby digital encoder so it can output 5.1 by compressing the audio to the AC-3 format. With Creative's cards I would not bother with digital out, tis too much of a hastle and you;re not using your card to its full potential. Since your 5.1 system already has analog inputs, just use the analog, you'll get a much better experience.

Well I've been debating whether to order the Prelude from newegg.....so I guess you just sealed the deal. I just bought this X-Fi to hold me over, as I've been stuck with onboard for months now.
I'm going to order it now and return the Fatality to newegg when it arrives. Thanks for the input, and rep + of course.

Well I went ahead and ordered the Prelude, and I'm going to order a TOSlink switch along with two cables so I can connect my DVR along with the sound card.
